Special Needs Dachshund..

.. This guy didn't stand much of a chance being special needs mixed in among the all breed kill shelter.. So I agreed to rescue him.. just because he deserves a chance.. he is different thats all.. blind and deaf but his other senses are very heightened.. so he copes very well and believe me his heart is the size of a building.. your lap would never be cold.. nor your cheek dry as this boy shares all he is with whomever pays him attention.. So if you are not put off by special needs dogs.. contact me.. Here he is..

Noah Is Home.. YAY

.. I picked up Noah at suppertime.. he was very glad to see me and let me know it with his vocalizing.. he looked real tired and of course the eye with the surgery was messy with dry blood.. but that will come off.. While I waited for the final tally of the bill as with the extra hour of surgery and two days post-op there it ended up being $1400.17 .. He has no teeth left .. they had them in a huge pill bottle for me to see.. They will have them on exhibit at their Open House in two weeks.. to show what happens when teeth are not looked after.. then they will give them to me.. I was shocked to see them all.. In any case I brought Noah home here.. fed him soft canned food with an antibiotic mixed in .. he was very hungry and ate it up no problem.. Now he is sleeping.. and I feel glad to be back.. my gang welcomed him with licks..

Thank You..

Noah's Surgery Today

.. Well poor Noah had his dental surgery and eye surgery today... The vet just called me.. the news wasn't good.. His teeth were so infected while she was pulling his canines puss was escaping from his nose in a stream.. then in the back teeth one side was so bad it had attached itself to the jaw bone... Surgery took an extra hour they were so bad.. She had not seen this severely rotted teeth.. it truly saddened her.. she informed me his white cell count was very high suggesting a dangerous level of infection in his system.

She explained how the buildup of tartar was a breeding ground for bacteria.. At first the gums become infected.. very much like human periodontal disease. The moist warm environment of his mouth was perfect for bacterial growth and grow it did eventually she said becoming so numerous as to freely wash down his throat to his stomach.. intestines.. and into his bloodstream. The bacteria she explained really loves the heart settling in there infecting the pericardium or the protective sac in which the heart rests.. now has resulted in a heart murmur.. I could just spit.. Imagine teeth like this..

Photobucket

He won't be coming home today as they want to keep him sedated with morphine as I imagine the pain to be horrific.. He will need she said weeks to months of antibiotics.. and soft food for the duration .. my heart is breaking.. How could someone have neglected him so badly then left him by the side of the road.. Now seriously who would want to foster or adopt this poor guy.. Its going to be a long hall for recovery both physically and emotionally.. Oh well I'll do my best with him ..

Please put him in your prayers.. that may sound silly to pray for a dog.. but I had to ask..

$993.17

... Yes as I thought the old guy Noah has both ears infected as well needs several teeth extracted if not all.. The cost of neglect.. but at least after tuesday he will be on the road to recovery.. Where will that money come from.. no idea yet.. but there is always plastic..

Sunday Morning

... I finally have a minute to myself to write.. this week I've been driving.. driving.. driving.. Oka.. Bromont.. Gramby.. Chamblay.. Saint Hubert.. Gatineau.. at least two bassets adopted .. three come in.. with the prospect of four so far coming this week coming.. However I must say the old guy that came friday is soooooo easy to have compared to the young ones.. the ten month old is full of beans.. never been on a leash.. but cute so she needs a little training..

Ellie the bloodhound's plans to be adopted fell through again.. so she continues waiting for a family sadly.. but needs a foster so I can get her out of boarding.. she is bored silly there..

Today I'm taking the old guy to the vet.. he has been neglected his nails alone curl into his paws.. he has a growth on his eye.. his teeth could use a cleaning.. I'll see what the vet says today..

I don't know what the afternoon will bring.. but I'm hopeful I can get a few personal things done.. besides its raining good day to run around.. So I'm off..

Disappointing Friends..

.. Of late I have truly disappointed a friend of mine.. She is on vacation and has been wanting me to come down to her place for a couple of days.. Well I thought I had it worked out.. but as anyone in rescue knows any type of break even two days is next to impossible especially since I am basically a one woman show and we cannot split ourselves in two sadly.. i haven't had a vacation in I don't know how long.. maybe 86 to the Expo in Vancouver.. I know this type of work puts a strain on any rescue.. most of them that I know are run by women.. many women alone.. as the men just don't get it.. the same way we are supposed to get their passions that they enjoy.. yes there not 24/7 like rescue but..

Anyways she still has a week.. and I hope to at least get to spend a day with her and have some fun.. Lou.. if you see this know how sorry I am..

Seniors

... Today I was thinking about the seniors I have and the ones that sit in wait.. What are we to do with senior bassets.. I know their fosters will tire of holding them.. and with my municipal problems as well my place is tooooo small.. I know it would take a lottery win for me to set up something like that.. and or a very generous benefactor or philanthropist who could use a good tax right off..

Older unwanted dogs need their own retirement home? Think about it...

Where would you go if you were an old basset hound and your person was too old or sick to take care of you any longer? Where would you go if your person didn’t want you anymore because you had too many accidents in the house, or you were too sick or too much trouble to take care of? Where would you go if your person died?

If you are a lucky old hound, someone would contact basset hound rescue and a foster home would be waiting to take you in and care for you until someone came along who wanted to adopt you. But what if there were so many other homeless basset hounds that there was no foster home for you? What if nobody wanted to adopt you because… you’re too old? Where would you go?

Sadly, this is usually the case. Foster homes are often hard to come by. People looking for an old hound to adopt are even harder to find. Who wants an old dog that might only have a few months or a year or two more to live? Who wants an old dog that might pee all over your carpet because he’s too old to get out the door in time? Who wants an old dog that might run up a lot of vet bills?

Yet, senior basset hounds are among the dearest, sweetest creatures on earth and they deserve to be loved and cared for as long as they live. You don’t dump Grandma off at the local shelter when she’s outlived her usefulness. You don’t take Grandpa to the doctor and say, “Put this old boy down, I can’t take care of him anymore.” You at least put them in a nice retirement home. Why would you do anything less for a loving, faithful companion just because he’s a dog?

In the US there is such a place..

House of Puddles accepts senior basset hounds from basset hound rescue organizations when there is no place else for them to go. They live with the lady who runs it, in her house, just like any other house pet. The only difference there are a lot of them. Her capacity is about 16 to 18 hounds at a time, and she is always full. As soon as one lives out his life, there is another one waiting to take his place.

I would love to have a home where I could do it all.. rescue and allow bassets to live out their lives if I cannot rehome them.. but I know it takes allot of money and help for such a thing.. My hat is off to House Of Puddles.. God bless you..

$4200.00

... Well today the doorbell rang.. there she was the canada post gal.. she asked me to sign and write my name in the little boxes.. Then promptly handed me two envelopes .. the fines I wrote about months ago finally made their way here.. For those of you who didn't read about these Rigaud municipal workers.. here is their last harassment

BHRQ Is Being Forced to Move or Cease Functioning

They already chased Kiko Rescue out of Rigaud in July after fines and harassment.. to another province.. imagine.. I sit here wondering am I going to jail as I cannot afford this craziness..

Dear Universe.. Hear my plea for aid in this issue .. I need your help..

FRENCH FOLLOWS

Please view this important report & video. Sophie Royer, a true animal warrior, presented her plea to the City Council of St-Hubert, to denounce the inadequate care for abandoned and lost animals. She discussed the barbaric method of the gas chambers used in the municipal pounds, naming the SCDD in
Saint-Hubert, QC.

A Prayer For Dogs..

.. Prayer For Dogs

"Dear lord, as we start each day
There's just one gift for which I pray
Please watch over all dogs everywhere
And bless them with someone to care.

Watch over the pups with plenty to eat
And the hungry strays out on the street
Those getting treats each time they yap
And those who struggle for every scrap

Those that sleep on a nice soft bed
Those with hard ground under their head
Those who play with girls and boys
And those who never have any toys

Those kept clipped and brushed and clean
And scruffy ones that don't smell too keen
Those who get to ride in cars
And those that sit behind cage bars

Those that flunk obedience school
Dig up the yard, snore and drool
Chew up your stuff, chase the cat
And they're still loved in spike of that

And those that are as good as gold
But left out to shiver in the cold
Chained up and forgotten there
They long for a warm home to share

Please god, as we end each night
Help more people do what's right
For each dog they meet, to do their best
And send your comfort to all the rest."

Frustrating Days..

.. Of late even though I should be thrilled I made some good adoptions.. the need just blows me away.. its not unusual for me to open my computer to Inbox (258).. 95% of them are kill lists.. its just heartbreaking.. many days I wish I knew people looking for dogs if not bassets other breeds.. I see so many pure breeds and mixed breeds being hopelessly put down.. just because of negligent owners.. or silly superstitions that black dogs are evil.. so they are usually the first in the gas chambers.. labrador after labrador .. " Black Dog Syndrome " its one of the silliest things I've ever heard.. and neither old dogs nor pups are immune from the gas.. as sweet as pugs are to collies.. spaniels.. maltese.. rottweilers.. you name the breed they are all victims.. Yet people go to the Pet Shop or the Breeders.. rather than SAVE A LIFE with a rescue.. There are so many sitting in rescues pacing the floors waiting.. I have to stop now I have a pick-up to do..
