.. These two poor 4 year olds cast aside like trash because Charlotte's last 2 litters died.. When I rescued her she had given birth just 3 weeks prior.. she was very thin her nails long and curled basically unkempt these indeed a bad sign of neglect.. she should have been a tad over weight to have sustained pups.. its no wonder they died.. Her nipples hang to the floor from so much breeding.. I doubt she was ever allowed to recover after each litter sadly.. her pregnancy figure will probably remain with slight adjustment her nipples should recede some but never be back to normal. However even though she was abused in such a manner her basset Spirit remained in tact.. she is a real sweet dog.. She had been kept in an outdoor barn so wasn't housebroken thats being worked on.. She is actually doing well .. also pretty clingy with her foster Mom.. as she really never felt cared for or loved.. She really enjoyed a trip to the groomer to get cleaned up.. She'll be spayed Aug.1.. and can then hope to get her Forever Home.. Isn't she sweet looking..
.. Now Billy Bob .. Well he really was filthy when I picked him up.. my van stunk of where ever he was kept.. likely in his own excrement.. his nails were curled and turned under.. I had to stop at the groomer before coming back home I needed to bath him and have her try to trim down his nails well at least get the curl off.. they were still very long.. After that I proceeded home.. Introduced the two to my gang here.. but of course her being an intact female the boys were after her.. I ended up sequestering them in the kitchen.. good thing as they were not house broken either. He was a little wary of the group trying to see his mate..
I called to get him neutered ASAP. the next day he was at the vets was neutered and given all his vaccines as he had not received any.. Typical of a " Back Yard Breeder " they don't care for the dogs just the money they can bring.. Billy Bob came through his surgery and is with his foster Mom learning about life outside the mill.. He was fearful of stairs.. was out of breath on walks.. but that too is changing with patience and effort.. Billy Bob will make someone an excellent companion.. He too is a sweetie..
I hope these two get their " Forever Home's " and have wonderful lives.

Junk Yard Charlie ..
..
Charlie was brought into the SPCA Montreal May 19th. with a target on his head to be euthanised because of aggression and poor health and lied about saying he was 9-10 years old.. Well as they know we are Basset Hound Rescue.. We got the call about a sick older basset.. So I told them I could not pick him up till I made arrangements for him with our vet Dr. Morel at St.Lazare Animal Hospital.. She agreed to fit him in the 20th at 5:40 in the afternoon.. We went to retrieve this boy not really knowing his shape or circumstance.. Well upon arrival at the SPCA.. we were handed a slip of paper with a scrawled signature on it.. a check for euthanization.. and we saw a $4.65 donation in the corner.. We shook our heads.. Cheap Son Of a B *** .. anyways we were lead to this poor soul in the holding area of the SPCA.. He looked awful.. I just wanted to get him the heck out of there.. the distress in his eyes.. not to mention the pus oozing .. They said.. he's a little aggressive too by the way .. then more of a story developed.. this if you can believe " gentle hearted basset " was used as a junk yard dog.. and in the end of his service it seemed he has some sore hips.. which could be due to his living outside.. which was very noticeable by the shape of his coat.. his eyes were just pus filled and was not wanting to be asked anything.. I tried to leash him to leave but he started growling and snarling.. he felt backed in a corner.. not a good thing for any dog.. So We swung open the large door and tried to coax him out.. he was trying to see through his sore eyes.. He finally did and an attendant there had a lasso rope.. he got it around his neck and I clipped my retractable leach on it.. and we left.. Oh geezzz I thought.. a 100 pound aggressive basset in my van.. was I crazy.. but outside he calmed a bit.. at the van he jumped in.. great I thought.. then to the vets hopefully in time for his appointment.. We arrived there took him in .. or I should say tried to.. he was not having anything to do with an office exam room with a closed door.. Outside we went till a bigger room was available.. We got him in there after waiting outside 20 minutes of so.. Then brought him in.. The vet wanted him muzzled as he was visibly aggressive and growling.. No .. no dice.. he needed to be tranquilized.. that meant taking him outside again an hour this time to calm down.. Well an hour of cold damp mosquito filled parking lot and I was feeling so bad for this confused boy.. we went in again.. The vet tek was able to muzzle him ( as hard as it is to believe muzzling a basset ) he was examined.. blood taken for heartworm test basic vaccines given and bordatella.. I knew I could not take this boy home with my other rescues in my house so I asked and pleaded that he stay the night there.. The vet doesn't "normally" do that but she made an exception.. I went home feeling a wreck.. This wasn't what I expected.. So the scramble was on to find him a place to stay.. NO ONE would take him for at least 48 hours.. So i left him as long as I could at the vets.. Picked him and his meds up and by that time found a place for him.. he just had to spend the night in my van.. I hoped he wouldn't eat it or me when I tried to get back in when morning came.. I snuck out in my PJ's around 11:00 brought him water and some food.. he snarled.. but ate.. we talked I tried to reassure him it would be okay.. and went back in.. came 5:30 I went out again after a very restless night.. I fed him again.. a bit but he did not like the eukanuba .. he prefered the hot dogs.. by 7 I decided I had to let him out for a pee and hoped he'd be okay and not go after me.. I had left the lasso leach on him and it dangled there as he sat on the bench seat of the van.. I grabbed it and hooked him to a 20' tether.. opened the side sliding door and he jumped.. sniffed around and I left him be while I went back inside.. I left him about 30 minutes then returned with my ramp.. step for the van.. having bassets myself I know that helps.. He looked at me I said okay back inside now Charlie.. He hesitated then ran to the other side of the van.. but I said Come On.. You can do it.. He put his two fronts up but the back of him was sore.. probably from being booted when he did not listen.. I reached down and helped this snarling guy in.. really quickly and closed the door.. Quite an adventure..
Drove him to the kennel where he presently is and being dealt with by a behaviorist that I feel will help this guy come around.. I could see in his eyes he still has the heart of a Basset beating in him.. he doesn't want to be aggressive or a scary dog.. Bassets are cuddlers .. easy going.. NON aggressive dogs.. basically prefer couch potatoes lifestyle..
Add him to your prayer list.. He really deserves an easier life than cement and dirt bed and maybe food and water..
After weeks and weeks with the trainers and myself .. I felt Charlie could go into "Foster Care " this could bring his trust issues to even higher plateaus.. I asked a friend and his wife.. They met Charlie with their basset Otto and it seemed okay..
Days passed he was making GOOD progress.. Otto wasn't thrilled.. Charlie had a nice soft cushy bed to sleep in.. his arthritice still plagued him though.. as well his pain in his hips.. all those kicks did severe damage.. He also had a couple of cysts/lumps.. on his side.. The vets exercised caution around him during visits.. muzzle was always needed.. His fear was very ingrained..
This past week Charlie was in allot of pain and his humor had regressed.. biting his foster Mom and Otto.. My worst fear had come true.. after talking with the trainers that worked with him for weeks and the vet.. There was only one answer.. I could not in my heart take him back to the cement enclosed kennel.. to be alone again and put through more.. I could not do that to him.. So I had to ask Frank if he would bury him on their property.. if I had a vet do a home visit to euthanise Charlie.. Frank said alright.. and i knew his heart too was breaking for Charlie as he tried very hard.. Charlie's last day was filled with good food a nice walk and was resting in his bed when the vet arrived..

BathDay.. Oh Joy
.. Well it was a day like no other.. I bathed the seven bassets here.. cleaned ears.. did maintenance.. They were pretty cooperative for the most part.. Sherlock had other plans.. He is such a little wiggler.. I started with Hoover..
He was easy.. no grief.. he just stood there with the sad eyes like " WHY ME " he was grubby.. HaHa.. then on to the others.. Lucky.. Micky..
Sherlock.. Wilson.. Oliver Twist
.. Then THE BIG BOY.. Percy.. No easy feat.. lifting him in the bath.. He was resisting.. but once a treat or two were offered he came around.. He kept sitting down on the drain hole.. I laughed.. and pushed his back side up.. but he is stubborn.. and continued till he was back over it again.. I said "FINE"
walked away.. He was non to happy.. I returned snapped his picture.. rinsed him again.. Took him out and that was that.. Everyone smelled great.. we used Billy Basset Wash Shampoo.. I was exhausted and sat for a few.. then cleaned up the area.. grabbed ALL the wet towels.. and we were off to bed..
Another successful adventure..

A Child's Wish For a Basset
.. It was a regular day I was out getting a few things at the store.. I returned home .. greeted the gang .. I noticed my phone flashing.. I thought another basset needs rescuing.. The message said I have two bassets I brought from Edmonton that I need to relinquish for my brother in law.. Please call me. Hmmm I thought okay.. I called him .. he explained how his BIL had driven from Edmonton with 5 dogs in tow from his rescue that he could not find homes for before heading east to move back home here in Quebec. Two of these dogs were bassets.. one male tri-color Billy.. one female red and white Betty.. they are 3.5 years old. So he asked could I take them.. I said sure.. just fill out the relinquish papers and meet me at the dog park at 6:00 tomorrow..here she is..
.. Well little did I know how the Cosmos/Universe had plans.. I had just adopted out my last red and white basset that friday lunch time.. The same day I received an email about a 5 year old who has a very rare leukemia and who's red and white basset had died while she was undergoing treatments and she was heart broken..From Enfant Soleil.. See her video.. http://www.oes.qc.ca/Capitale-Nationale bottom left hand side.. Alyson Morin.. and her Personal website http://soso28.jimdo.com/ lists her favorite things..
This family had no funds to get her another basset.. and she wanted a rescue as they had had before.. This was all to wild for me .. I thought how could this be.. a red and white 3.5 year old basset is coming to me tonight from Edmonton.. This little girl has a wish list that includes having a red and white basset that would help her deal with her cancer.. as she cannot go out as her immune system is so compromised she is home schooled .. and here I was in the middle..
.. These bassets showed up.. not in the best of shape.. the girl had an urinary tract infection I discovered soon after bringing her home when she continually urinated on my kitchen floor with blood.. The next day we were off to the vets I brought a sample.. which is no easy feat with 8 bassets running around.. but I managed.. Sure enough she had the UTI.. it meant 10 days of Clavamox antibiotic.. I phoned the family of the little girl.. explained I had a basset for Alyson but she was sick and needed treatment for 10 days.. Well the Dad said.. That's alright Alyson knows all about treatments.. she's been sick for 2 years now and has chemo every wednesday for the next year ( if she survives ) she is 1 of 6 in Canada with this rare form of leukemia and has died twice already .. I said alright then but don't tell her let it be a surprise.. He agreed..
.. Tuesday was the day Alyson was to get Betty.. It was a long drive 4 hours to get there but we made it.. Alyson was resting.. Betty upon entering their home went to Alyson's bedroom door and nudged it open.. even though she was still on leash.. Alyson lifted her head and rolled out of bed.. talking and hugging Betty.. She asked if she could walk her and did.. I was talking with her parents trying to explain all that needed to be done for Betty.. I gave Alyson a big gift bag full of basset stuff.. she quickly put it in her room.. While I was talking with her Mom.. her Dad asked her " So do you like Your present " she was puzzled she thought I was visiting with Betty.. He told her " No.. this lady brought her for You " .. Well the tears started to flow.. She came running to hug me and say THANK YOU THANK YOU.. I LOVE HER.. My heart soared for this little girl .. who missed her Poppy ( her basset that passed away ) She hugged and sat talking with Betty.. She fed her gave her treats.. I brought all kinds of stuff with me for them..
.. I stayed 2 hours and knew I had a 4 hour drive back to my gang so I better get going.. Alyson had disappeared.. shortly she came out of her room with Betty and a picture she drew for me.. of her home .. a tree .. the daisies she picked for me when she walked Betty .. and of course Betty.. What a sweetheart this little girl was...
.. You know some days when I wonder .. What its all about.. I will always have this wonderful experience to draw upon.. For I thrive on Random Acts of Kindness .. and what better thing to do than make the WISH of a Little Girl.. come true.. Alyson and Betty.. My life is so much richer for knowing You both and the Universe allowing me to be a vessel for It.. As well the Municipality of Rigaud.
