Geezzzz I miss the Pups

.. I'm really feeling it.. I was looking around and finding all their crazy toys and bits and pieces of their chewies.. they never seemed to finish.. I got all the scraps of leftover newspaper.. I haven't had time to clean up the walls of all their foot prints and shmootz on the walls.. as subsequently two more have come in.. that needed neutering and are here recovering tonight.. so I kept the crate up incase one might find comfort and security in it.. I must say I was terribly disappointed that Berger Blanc had let this one boy I rescued from a family be adopted out at Christmas time without being sterilized.. hence perpetrating the overcrowded population.. I just don't get it..

.. I also had to go get the two senior brothers today.. and get them into foster.. so I have been running around.. Even with these distractions I miss the pups sitting in front of me giving their little grrrrrrrrrrrrr to get a kiss.. Yes I'll not soon forget those 7 little faces..

Today My Last Girl Goes

Photobucket

.. Well #1 will be going to her Forever Home.. with a dachshund/basset mix called Fernando.. its a tough morning I find.. I used to as soon as my feet hit the floor I'd start singing.. " Good Morning.. Good Morning.. Good Morning.. Good Morning To You and You and You and You.. they they would run like heck to the kitchen sit in front of me for their morning kisses.. and if I missed one he/she would sit there and give a little grrrrrrrrrr till I gave a kiss.. But this morning it was just one..

Mind you Hoover.. Micky.. Farley.. Gracie and Mojo wanted one.. Percy of course was still asleep.. lol.. Now no more of shots like this..

She was there with Boxer Rescue.. I was between her and Greyhound Rescue.. I got the table pretty much set up.. and then the fun began.. I had brought the two pups that were adopted for pick-up.. then I had also brought Gracie as well hernia boy.. They were the hit of the day..

Another Puppy Mill Investigation.. Don't Miss It..

"Well friends, once again, the cat is out of the bag - or should we say the dog out of the hutch! This Friday night, March 27, ABC's Nightline will be investigating puppy mills!

ABC Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi and investigators from Nightline travel the byways and back roads of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania - visiting numerous puppy mills and filming Main Line Animal Rescue's volunteers as they rescue breeding dogs and puppies from Lancaster County's notorious Amish commercial breeding facilities.

This promises to be a very special program. If you are involved in rescue, advocate on behalf of the millions of puppy mill dogs interned in our nation's commercial dog breeding facilities, or if you just simply love animals, you will not want to miss this.

Sharyn Alfonsi interviewed, on camera, an Amish breeder while touring his facility - a first for network television. With approximately 500 dogs housed on his property, this commercial breeder speaks openly about an industry cloaked in secrecy and suspicion - the cruel factory farming of man's best friend.

PLEASE tell your friends, your family, your coworkers - ABC Nightline investigates puppy mills - this Friday at 11:35 pm (Eastern Standard Time). Please take the time to forward this to all the rescues, shelters, and legislators in your area.

It has been almost one year since Oprah's puppy mill show aired. That program received the highest viewer response of any Oprah Show in years. Now we need to spread the word about this very special Nightline. Only by educating as many people as we can, will we be able to help these animals. And after you watch the program, please don't hesitate to contact ABC and Nightline to thank them for casting such a strong light on the plight of our nation's puppy mill dogs.

Bill Smith
Main Line Animal Rescue

Friday's airing of Nightline's investigation of puppy mills is subject to breaking news. If for any reason it is not shown, it will air the beginning of next week. Please check listings for your time zone."

Getting Ready For The Pet Fair

... Tomorrow is the Pet Fair / Pet Idol Day.. I'm excited to begin seeing the public again.. its always a fun activity. The room is full of avid pet lovers to see the various rescues there.. we have about 12-15 rescues participating.. plus a myriad of booths related to pets.. The stage will be set for the parade of rescues then the Pet Idol talents will hit the runway.. and show their stuff to a howling crowd.. I'll see some of my past rescues that said they may pop in to see me.. I'll be sure to bring my digital.. to capture moments there.. I'm bringing two pups that are being picked up there to go to their new guardians.. Oh its going to be an emotional roller coaster for sure.. thank goodness for distractions..

After delivering one yesterday I noticed Hoover last night doing extra head counts and ear cleanings as he seemed to notice something was different or wrong in his mind.. I know this is going to be hard on him as well.. after all he has been such a GREAT big brother to this brood from day one into the rescue.. seems like yesterday they invaded haha.. and now they are ready to spread their wings.. They have gone from this..

A Successful Day Farley and Watson Have Homes

.. Well I am thrilled to say this has been a good day.. I was able to place two more bassets in wonderful homes.. hence making room for two more waiting in the wings.. Its always bitter sweet however this is what rescue is.. for me its always loosing a piece of my heart with each rescue.. but luckily most placements stay in touch and that always makes me feel better.. and gives me hope for another day..

Getting Ready For The Pet Fair

.. Saturday March 28th. Basset Hound Rescue Quebec will be at the Hudson Community Center on Main Road.. Hudson Quebec .. Not only is this an Adoption Clinic.. it also is a Pet Idol Day where animals get to show their talents.. and win prizes.. It promises to be allot of fun..

I will bring a few bassets with me as well to show on the run way.. and maybe make some new contacts for fostering etc. as I feel this might be a busy year for rescues.. and I'll need all the help I can get.

Hope to see You there.. drop by the booth..

Farley The Basset..

.. Well lets see Farley was bought at a pet shop.. four months later turned into a kill shelter.. adopted out and now 9 months later again in a rescue situation.. How sad for this boy to be shuffled around like an old table.. One good part of this is that he ended up here and not dead as was suggested.. the owner was fed up.. she wanted a couch potato dog.. bassets are not like that when they are young.. I do wish people would do the research homework before taking on a basset.. Here is Farley.. He needs a Forever Home.. without the drama..

Photobucket

Puppies Like The Weirdest Toys..

.. I have bought them a wide array of toys from ropes to kongs .. as well stuffies.. Well these are things they play with the most.. Go figure..

Puppies Get Vaccinated

.. Well today 6 of the seven pups were vaccinated.. the hernia boy is on antibiotics and we didn't want to mix that.. so he'll get his on the 28th. The vet was so surprised how they have tripled their weight and how nosy they have become.. she had to put her bags up as they were into them like crazy..she laughed and said they sounded like a herd of buffalo running around.. All was good health wise.. temperatures.. eyes.. ears.. hearts.. I felt proud of the job I've done.. I think she was pleasantly surprised.. Well next time its their boosters and they will be ready to begin their new lives with their guardians.. and I'll miss them like crazy as will Hoover and Micky..I mean the faces.. haha

Hernia Surgery..

.. One of the pup's I rescued in January was suffering from a hernia.. but as they were just 3 weeks old there were not to many options but to wait as long as he wasn't in severe pain.. Well his hernia surgery was performed Wednesday and he is doing fine despite the fact that it was a difficult surgery lasting over an hour.. Geeezzz sometimes I wish we had medicare for dogs.. this surgery cost $517.00 .. but the long and short of it is.. He is fine.. even though he has this to contend with..

Pets & Their Food

.. I often am asked about what I feed the bassets here.. Well I say a mixture of both raw and kibbled food.. Raw as I am a true believer of the B.A.R.F. diets .. as you see here my Percy loves chicken legs..

Photobucket

The pet food industry is an 11 billion dollar a year, unregulated operation that feeds on the garbage that otherwise would and should end up in a landfill. Pet food manufacturers have become masters at getting pets to eat things they would normally turn their nose up at.

Pet food scientists have learned that it’s possible to take a mixture of inedible garbage, fortify it with artificial vitamins and minerals, preserve it so it can sit on the grocery shelf for more than a year, add dyes to make it attractive and then extrude it into whimsical shapes, making it appealing to us humans so we will purchase it. Unfortunately what makes up most of dog and cat food today (those not qualified as "human-grade) comes from the rendering plant. To render, as defined in Webster’s Dictionary, is “to process as for industrial use; to render livestock carcasses and to extract oil from fat, blubber, etc., by melting.” Some things that go into rendering are:

* Spoiled rotten meat from the supermarket, styrofoam wrap and all.

* Road kill that can’t be buried on the roadside.

* The “4-D’s” of cattle; dead, dying, diseased and disabled

* Rancid restaurant grease

* Euthanized pets, this is NO joke! (more about this below)

Slaughterhouses where cattle, pigs, lambs and other animals meet their fate provide more fuel for rendering. After slaughter, heads, feet, skin, hair, feathers, carpel and tarsal joints and mammary (milking) glands are removed. This material is sent to rendering. Animals that have died on their way to slaughter are also rendered. Cancerous tissue, tumors and worm infested organs are rendered. Injection sites, blood clots and any other inessential parts are rendered. Stomach and bowels are rendered. Contaminated material including blood is rendered.
At the rendering plant, slaughterhouse material, supermarket refuse, rancid restaurant grease, dead livestock, road kill and euthanized pets are dumped into huge containers. A machine slowly grinds the entire mess. After it is chipped or shredded, it is cooked at 220 - 270 degrees F. for approximately 20 minutes to one hour. Here are some of the chemical preservatives that are used in mass-produced pet food today:
* BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) - know to cause kidney and liver dysfunction

* BHT (butylated hydroxytolulene) - know to cause kidney and liver dysfunction

* Ethoxyquin - suspected of causing cancer

* Propylene glycol (also used as automotive antifreeze) causes destruction of red blood cells-and is also commonly found in many treats such as Pedigree Dentabone/DentaStix etc

Are there really pets in pet food?

Unfortunately when a vet tells a grieving pet owner they will “take care” of their dead loved one, they usually mean sending it off with a disposal company for rendering. This is all perfectly legal. Many veterinarians and especially shelters don’t bury or cremate animals.
Reporter John Eckhouse was one of the first people to discover the practice of sending euthanized pets to the rendering plants. A rendering plant employee was quoted as saying “thousands and thousands of pounds of dogs and cats are picked up and brought here everyday”. Although many in the pet food industry deny they use euthanized animals, proof that the practice goes on continues to surface. Research done on rendering plants that sell meat to pet food companies found that the rendering plants accept everything from road kill, dead zoo animals and euthanized pets from both shelters and veterinary clinics.

The unfortunate reality is

Huge food manufacturers use pet food companies as a cheap and profitable way of disposing of the waste from their human food manufacturing plants. Here is a list of some of these companies and the pet foods they manufacture:

* Nestle: Alpo, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Mighty Dog, Purina

* Heinz: 9 lives, Amore, Gravy Train, Kibbles-n-Bits, Nature’s Recipe

Watson

.. Well today I received this boy called Watson.. He is quite thin .. his owner said it was because he had been displaced for 2 weeks.. and didn't really eat.. Well once he was here I tell you he gobbled down a bowl of food plus a big drink of water before he met the puppies.. He is almost 3 and I wasn't sure how he would react.. but true to a bassets nature he loved them jostling around him sniffing him.. two were barking at this new arrival.. Hoover tried to reassure them that he was okay.. Its truly amazing that bassets are so resilient.. I mean here this boy has been shuffled in the last couple of weeks.. probably suffered separation anxiety.. then he winds up with me and a house full of dogs.. and he just takes it all in stride.. Yes this boy will make someone a great addition to their family..

Bonded Pair of Senior Boys

.. Sometimes we get senior bassets they take special people to be willing to adopt .. most people want pups or younger ones.. I'm never sure its always the right choice.. After all these are seasoned dogs.. they are past all the toddler antics.. they don't ask for much.. With an adult dog what you see is what you get.. no guessing how they will look .. as adults they can hold themselves allot longer than a pup.. their characters are easy going as they have life experience.. No muss no fuss.. and GREAT COMPANIONS.. So back to these boys they need forever homes they are both over 6 years of age hence making them senior adoptees..Their Mom had a stroke leaving her unable to care for them as well herself.. Sad to say the least.. These boys have had their world turned upside down.

Now aren't they sweet..

What A Difference A Day Makes

.. In rescue we always have to expect the unexpected.. Today I got a phone call from Webster's adopted parents.. the Mom had been told today at work that a co-worker had been let go and she was now to perform double duty which would include 2 weeks a month away from home.. Well this news sent her into a tailspin.. WEBSTER she thought.. would have to be returned as she could not give him the care he needs.. She was crying on telephone very distraught I felt bad for both of them.. So Webster is back in foster care awaiting a new forever home.. Yes what a difference a day makes..

Update March 14th.. Webster has his FOREVER HOME.. Thanks Ian..

The Basset 500.. A Work In Progress

.. Today Hoover was trying to get his little charges to run a race with him around the house.. I know by the looks on their faces they thought he was crazy.. they did follow him but not at the speed he wanted.. well not yet anyways.. I'm sure before they go to their new homes they will have been involved in a few Basset 500's.. most basset owners know this activity quite well.. and it can always bring a smile to your face..

Tootsie & Webster Have Forever Homes

.. The trials of rescuing are always difficult.. however there are times when you get to see the Universe in action.. Tootsie went into foster after her spay and the family loved her from the get go.. I mean look at her.. Photobucket .. Then Webster was seen at the dog park while his foster was taking him on a social outing.. again a very handsome basset stole a heart Photobucket .. So as it stands today both of these bassets have their forever homes and I couldn't be more pleased.

BHRQ Foster Parents Bravo

.. You know its very hard to find reliable foster homes for bassets.. but I must say I feel blessed by those that have stepped up to the plate.. especially since the municipality came down on me last year for too many dogs.. Rescues depend on fosters to allow us to rescue as many bassets as possible.. I know just in these last few weeks I've needed fosters and 4 stepped up.. for that I am so grateful .. These people will never know how very valuable they are within this Universe and how their act of kindness will undoubtedly bring them good karma.. So I humbly say THANK YOU to Fosters everywhere..

Percy & The Pup

.. Even my old boy Percy at 13 can share a tender nap with a puppy.. I watched them for a while and thought to myself.. Percy was once that size.. wish I could have seen him then.. I only rescued him at 4 years old.. it was sure heart warming for me to see him like this..

Photobucket

Yup love my ole boy Percy..

New Girl

.. Yesterday I rescued this 2 year old girl.. The family had a new baby and they felt that she wasn't getting the attention she deserved so they called me.. Here she is

Photobucket

She's at the vet now being spayed.. then into foster care to recuperate I'm sure she'll make some family a wonderful addition....
