D.J. is a 3 year old Red & White Basset Hound that was brought into Polk County (FL) Animal Control as part of an animal cruelty case weighing only 36 lbs.
Yes this is what Basset Rescues have to deal/cope with sadly.. Can you imagine what this boy has gone through..
D.J. is a special needs boy. We believe D.J. has a broken femur and possible nerve damage to the leg. He is extremely malnourished and is also heartworm +. D.J. got his name from the vet, Dr. Joe, who informed us that with some extensive medical care and a lot of TLC D.J. would be able to have a happy, healthy hound life.
D.J. is in Suncoast Basset Rescue's care and will need to gain weight before he can have the extensive surgery and to be treated for heartworms. He has a long road ahead of him and is a prime example of why Suncoast Basset Rescue exisits.
We feel fortunate to be a part of D.J.'s recovery and will keep regular updates coming on D.J.'s Progress.
UPDATE #1
D.J. was evaluated by the vet - his injury is a broken femur, and the injury is about 3-4 weeks old. This poor guy had suffered for quite some time. He is being treated and he sadly is infested with Heart Worm Disease. The main goal is to get him back into a healthier state so that we can treat his Heart Worms. He is coming along and it will be a long process. Fortunately he is in a foster home that has the time and willingness to see him through, no matter the length of time he needs.
UPDATE #2
"DJ" is doing really good. He is getting around very good considering all he has gone through.
He can get up and move around on his own. He is now growling when he wants to play, where before when we first got him he would not make a sound. He likes to try and follow Judy and I around the house when he is out to exercise. As for his eating, well he is now wanting to eat everything in the house, and drinks plenty of water. "DJ" is a very loving hound, he just wants a friend, someone to bond to.
As of today "DJ" weighs according to my scale 44lbs. Which is a an approx. 8.2lbs weight gain since we got him.
"DJ" still has a long way to go. He is still having problems with his front feet, and we are not sure what direction the broken femur is going to go. He is still in a splint, and we are looking at it being removed here in the next week. Where it will be re-evaluated by the vet.
UPDATE # 3 8/16/2008
DJ went through his surgery with no problems. He has also completed
his treatment for "Whip worms". Also he has just been started on his
heart worm treatment. DJ is doing great he has gained 12.2 lbs. He is really looking good.. His personality is really coming out. He loves to play with our
Phoebe, who is in love with him....... She lets DJ sleep on her bed
with her and eat out of her dish, and that is a first on both counts..
The one thing that we have found to be a bit strange with DJ is his
bark. He has a bark like a screech owl, I am not kidding you have
never heard anything like it.... but that is "DJ". His hind leg is healing well, he is now putting a bit of weight on it as he walks. The Vet said that he will always have a funny little twist to his leg, but it will be use able. His front feet, well we will just have to wait and see how his strength progresses, before we decide what has to be done there.
"DJ" is a wonderful boy, he will make someone a fantastic family
member

Why adopt an "older dog?'Like Ashton
I believe this explains it all
One By One
One by one, they pass by my cage... too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play. Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore. It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed, a place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail. Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong, I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head, can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day, the younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope, you saw my face and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey and the legs bent with age, and felt I still had life beyond this cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed, and shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play and you talk to me low, you talk to me dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another, but you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give you, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week or for years, we will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new, my thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear, of the person who made my last days so dear.

Once upon a time there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean to do his
writing. He had a habit of walking on the
beach before he began his work.
One day he was walking along the shore.
As he looked down the beach, he saw a
human figure moving like a dancer. He
smiled to himself to think of someone
who would dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw that it was a
young man and the young man wasn't
dancing, but instead he was reaching
down to the shore, picking up something
and very gently throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out, "Good
morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean, past the breaking waves and said - "It made a difference for that one."
Think about Rescuing A Basset please..
.. I belong to a group of individuals that do rescue transport to TRY to get dogs to their forever homes all over Canada and the USA.. called Cross Boarder Dog Rescue.. We know not everyone out there can have volumes of dogs but through word of mouth new drivers sign up to help do legs of a transport.. Often the legs are 60 miles.. its not a huge commitment really but in the life of that " Dog " it means the difference often between life and death .. as many are rescued from kill shelters or pounds that are overwhelmed with dogs.. Each rescue has a story.. many heartbreaking.. Yes it goes on everywhere.. puppy mills are raided.. animal hoarders are turned in by neighbors.. then there are just regular folks that have to choose between food on their table or food for the dog/dogs.. often the choice is simple for them.. The Pound.. or abandoned by the side of the road.. Or then again just last sunday I was called up to Saint Sauveur to get a basset pup 3-4 months old abandoned .. no rhyme or reason.. just left to fend for himself.. How long could he have lasted.. no telling but I'm sure not long..
.. So if anyone reading this has a bit of time to help transport a dog.. please think about signing up.. at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CBDR/
This group helps rescues on both sides of the border move dogs freely from shelters, humane societies, animal controls and rescue groups to forever home, foster homes and other rescues. Notices are posted about dogs in need, urgent situations and plea's for help. Transport help and home visits can also be requested on list. As with all groups, respect and courtesy of others is expected.
If you have any questions on this group, feel free to write to CBDR-owner@yahoogroups.com for details ..
I Thank You.. For Those That Cannot Speak..
.. I think basseteers are GREAT folks.. today I received a case (36) children's books by a Published Basseteer named Cathy L. Rudert she is the Author of Lily.. A Basset Hounds Tail of Love..
I was so surprised to get this delightful donation for the rescue.. as well She sent some to Alyson my little basseteer in Quebec City fighting for her life with leukemia everyday.. Her Dad called me today to tell me the news of this special gift arriving for Alyson.. as well others that have read my writings about her.. Yes I have so much faith in the Universe and regular basseteers.. who have shown this little girl.. that relative strangers CARE about her wellbeing and go the distance to bring her a smile during these awful cancer treatments she goes through weekly.
.. Personally I HOPE all the folks that have shown this little basseteer joy receive great big deposits in their Grace Bank Accounts as their Random Acts of Kindness are truly a blessing to her.
THANK YOU ALL.. You can Order a book on www.bassethoundrescuequebec.com Catalogu page
