Scooter.. Can You Help
This is Scooter..
.. This precious baby was going to be drowned by a breeder because he was born with deformed knee caps. They obviously were not feeding him.. hoping he would die on his own. He is only 9 weeks old. Poor baby. He deserves a chance. We think he is "SPECIAL" little man.. this boy will steal your heart!! Scooter's medical bills are rising daily. He has to be transported and then seen by a specialist and probably will need a custom wheelie chair... a small donation to help him along his way? He has a sweet.. gentle soul and CAN/WILL find a home and live the good life.. but someone has to pay for his care in the meantime...
Can you help? Send donations to BHRQ through PayPal or to our address on the website.. Thank you..

Rescues Go Above and Beyond..
.. I belong to a group of Cross Boarder Dog Rescuers.. Which I am so proud of as well in awe of.. They week after week help save dogs from terrible conditions.. beit kill pounds/raids/hurricane victims you name it.. and folks here in Canada step up as well to try to help these dogs.. Just one example that shows just how hard some folks try.. Here is a deaf Catahoula coming to Canada.. with God's Grace & allot of volunteers help..This is a typical one..
We are requesting assistance to transport INDY, a handsome and sweet DEAF altered male Catahoula, from foster care with Catahoula Rescue Inc in Fort Worth, TX to his well screened adoptive home in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, on Friday to Sunday, October 3rd to 5th, 2008. We are trying to add a second dog, MOMMA, a female Catahoula who needs to get from Texas to CRI foster care in Pennsylvania ... details to come if she can make it.
INDY must get to Little Rock AR on Friday, and to Columbus OH on Saturday, so he can meet up with a run coordinated by Lucy Moye that will bring him into Ontario.

Dodger & Freckles Now Roomies
.. Yes its a rescues delight when a pair of bassets are adopted.. as most bassets do well in pairs.. They afford each other the companionship as well tire each other out hence limiting any anxieties when left alone..
.. Their new owners were so well prepared when I delivered them I was amazed.. two new beds for them.. toys and pull ropes .. treats and a BIG bag of the food I recommended.. no gates to cordon them off.. a house where the infamous " Basset 500 " will run.. no competition for affection.. The new owners were waiting as I drove up the driveway arms open ready to receive their new friends..
.. Yes its a really good feeling when you know your doing the best humanly possible for your rescues.. well with a little " Universal " help..
Thank You Anthony & MJ for taking Dodger & Freckles and allowing them to Grace your home..

Puppy Mill Horror
Fri, 2008-09-26 15:21.
Kathy Coulombe
A horrific case of animal-abuse in the Lower-Laurentians. The SPCA raided a puppy mill on Kildaire in Rawdon this afternoon, rescuing dozens of dogs from hellish conditions. They were being kept in steel-cages stacked floor-to-ceiling with several animals in each cage. The dogs were terrified, covered in open sores, infested with parasites and starving. Many were dead. Rebecca Aldworth of Humane Societies International says it's one of the worst cases they've seen.
The conditions at this puppy mill were by far the worst we have ever encountered. Ammonia burned our eyes and noses. The dogs were living in tiny wire cages stacked on top of one another. They had little or no access to food or water. Some were in cages in closets. Others were confined with deceased companions. Ninety percent of the dogs we rescued were severely emaciated, and many needed immediate medical attention.
All of the animals are now in an emergency shelter, free from the squalid cages where they had been doomed to spend their lives.
109 live dogs, 7 cats and a rabbit were seized from the puppy-mill. The SPCA is now looking for foster homes to nurse them back to health. The SPCA's brought on extra people to handle the logistics.
Contact the SPCA or Humane Societies International Canada at 514-395-2914 (hsicanada.ca) if you can foster one of these dogs.

Judy's Beloved Hector The Basset R.I.P.
Hector, beloved Bassethound of Roger and Judy C., on September 17 2008, was gently helped from his pain at age 8 years.
Hector was a rescue dog from SPCA Monteregie who came into our life at age 1 ½ years old. Hector was a noble boy, and did a tv commercial on railway safety—donating his earned fee to the SPCA Monteregie who had taken him in, so they could help other dogs. Hector loved his comfort and took up our space on the sofa—keeping his eyes shut so he wouldn’t have to see us staring at him expectantly to move over for us. Hector was a very loving boy but was quite vocal if he didn’t want to do something, a real grump, he could doggy-swear very well! But eventually gave way. He loved his family, and liked nothing better than to be close to us, whether watching tv or going for his beloved walks—but never in the rain, he hated to get his feet wet! The highlight of Hector’s walks was to be fussed over by children and their parents, he loved his fan club, especially Dan.
Grudgingly tolerant of foster animals coming in and out of our home for Gerdy’s Rescues, Hector was always glad to bid them adieu as they were adopted. A master food thief, he specialized in snatching pizza, toast, and sandwiches in a split second off plates of distracted guests and us. His buddies Murphy and Josephine will miss him sharing our home. Was a buddy to our cats Frankie, Blossom, Joy, and Little Red. A loving cousin to cats Spike and Teddy. He was met and helped across The Rainbow Bridge by our dear Meg and Charlie. He will be ever remembered by Roger and Judy C and family
“I could have missed the pain, but I’d of had to miss the dance.”
Thank you Hector for the time we had with you. We were Blessed.
Mummy and Daddy
Judy & Roger we at BHRQ offer Our Sincere Condolences for this loss of Your beloved Hector.. He knew nothing short of your love daily.. If you look close You can see the twinkle in his eyes..

They Just Keep Coming
.. Today I'll be going to pick up another in Montreal at a Walmart Store.. He is just 9 months a stray picked up but no one has come forth.. I thought after my last rush things might slow down.. however it appears they won't.. I need more room.. Maybe the cosmos will help me relocate to a larger home or mini-farmette.. where I can have the space I need for all these rescues.. after tonight I'll be back up to 11 dogs..
Yes sleeping for me will be at a premium .. till everyone gets the lay of the place as well the sleeping time.. however I know with each newbie that comes in to Grace this rescue.. needs a couple or more days to settle in.. I'm so glad my personal dogs are a great WELCOMING COMMITTEE .. Yup allot of Aaarrroooo's tonight..

Crazy Successful Weekend
Yes it was crazy not only did I rescue three dogs I also participated in a 10 kl ( 6 mile ) walk for cancer.. Thank goodness the weather was great on both days.. Truly the Higher Power was at work for I felt really blessed with both activities.. I brough both Hoover and Micky Mouse to represent BHRQ as well I sported a T-Shirt for NRAOK.. so there was plenty of talk.. about both charities..
Today I learned our little Basseteer Alyson In Quebec City area with leukemia received a new laptop computer.. I'm so thrilled that You guys/gals read this blog and made this little girls life better .. Now all her stays in hospital will not cut her off from her beloved basset Betty.. Yup its good to be alive..
Thank You to my audience here at the BHR Chronicles.. Keep doing those Random Acts of Kindness.. You never know when You might need one..

Buford The Basset
.. This is Buford..
He is a lovely boy that deserves better than a cement floor and gravel to walk on just because he has a grain allergy.. It hardly seems fair he was given up for such a trite cause.. His allergies are under control with his dry kibble and now is fit as a fiddle.. he only eats between 2-4 cups a day.. not a huge expense.. I really wish someone had room for this boy.. He isn't with my rescue but he is close by with a friends one.. who originally was given him before he was to be euthanized..
I hope someone gets in touch with me for this boy.. When I left him yesterday he looked at me like this..
Heartbreaking for me.

Doing Housework With Bassets..
.. When you have a rescue in your home and 6 bassets running around there is no time to keep up with cleaning.. I mean the basics get done but even thats a task.. changing the sheets on the futon can be a challenge as they find it most fun to run and jump on the mattress.. vacuuming well thats a howlfest.. with Hoovy keeping beat scratching in the ceramic kitchen floor to show his anxiety with the vacuum .. mopping.. well they have to see aqnd smell the buckets with each change.. they love lavender scent anything.. the cats head for the basement.. the birds well they quiet right down..
I'm trying to get my fall big jobs done.. ie: getting drool off walls.. reorganizing the bedding/towels.. fall clothes must come out.. the living room needs a new coat of paint.. bathroom has taken a beating washing all these dogs the water on the floor has softened it a bit by the tub.. Glad I got that " Booster Bath " saves my back now washing them all.. especially with the fall rains and mud these days.. Soon the leaves will blanket the yard and poop will be harder to find.. thats when I really could use a mud room.. haha.. However for today I'll do what I can.. but I can't wait for the snow.. Yes its a daily challenge keeping everything relatively clean and poop scooped..

Melissa sat on the floor, unable to sit straight and tall like her mother had always admonished her to do when she was a child. Today, it would be impossible. And tomorrow... it probably wouldn't be possible then either. Her mind was too busy thinking about the dog that lay across her lap.
When he came to be with her, he had no name. She remembered that day very well. The first sight of him was enough to break her heart into little pieces.
The woman, who had taken this dog from the rough streets where he had lived, had tried to save him because she was unable to watch this young dog find his own food in a dumpster outside the crack house where he lived. Nobody cared that he was gone.
His fur was very thick; so thick that she had to wiggle her fingers down to feel his bony body. And as she pulled her fingers away again, they were coated in old dirt. Black and white, he was supposed to be. But on that day he was beige and dust.
He sat in the back of her car panting continuously, ears laid outward for he had lost his courage and couldn't keep them proud and tall. He sat motionless, waiting and limp.
But the thing that was the most disturbing was the look in his eyes. They were quiet eyes, sunken into his head - and they watched her. They were alive with thought. He was waiting for her to do something 'to' him.
Little did he know at the time that, instead, she would 'give' something to him. She gave him one of the little broken pieces of her heart.
She reached out to stroke his head and he instinctively squinched his eyes shut and dropped his head, waiting for the heavy hand. With that little bit of movement she gave him another one of the broken pieces of her heart.
She took him home and gave him a bath. She toweled him dry and brushed some order back into his coat. For that, he was grateful and even though his own heart was loaded with worms, he accepted yet another piece of her heart, for it would help to heal his own.
'Would you like some water, big boy?' She whispered to him as she set down a large bowl of cold well water. He drank it up happily. He had been dehydrated for a long time and she knew it would take him most of the week to re-hydrate.
He wanted more water - but it was gone. Ah... that's how it is, he thought to himself. But he was grateful for what he had been able to get. 'Would you like some more?' and she gave him another bowl along with another little piece of her heart.
'I know that you are hungry. You don't have to find your own food anymore. Here's a big bowl of good food for you. I've added some warm water and a little piece of my heart.'
Over the four months that he stayed with her, his health improved. The heart full of worms was replaced piece by piece with little bits of her loving heart. And each little piece worked a very special kind of magic.
When the warmth of love and gentle caresses are added, the little broken pieces knit together again and heal the container it resides in. That container becomes whole again.
She watched each little broken piece fill a gap in the gentle dog until his quiet eyes radiated the light from the little pieces. You see, kind words gently spoken turn the little pieces into illumination for the spirit that resides within.
He rested beside her, happy to be with her always. Never had he known such kindness, such gentle caresses; such love. His health had returned, his spirit was playful as a young dog's should be and he had learned about love.
Now his heart was full. The healing was complete. It was time to go. There was another person who had another heart that was meant to be shared with him.
So she sat shapeless on the floor because all the broken pieces of her heart were with the dog. It is difficult to sit tall when your heart is not with you. She wrapped her arms around the dog that sat with tall, proud ears for her. Lean on me, he said.
And she gave him one last thing that would keep him strong; that would keep the pieces of her heart together long after he had gone on to live his new life. She gave him her tears and bound them to the pieces with a simple statement made from the ribbons of her heart.
'I love you, Joe.'
And Joe lived happily ever after.
Melissa sat on the floor, straight and tall like her mother had always admonished her to do when she was a child. Today, it would be possible. And tomorrow... it probably would be possible too. Because her mind was busy thinking about this, the next dog that lay across her lap.
Where did she get the heart to help yet another dog, you ask?
Ahhh... it came with the dog. They always bring a little bit of heart with them. And when the rescuer breathes in that little bit of heart, it quickly grows and fills the void left by the last dog.

Where Did He/She Come From ?
... Often times I am asked that question.. Helen.. " Where's this one from ? " There are several different ways these rescues come ( God's Grace being one ).. some are relinquished by their owners.. with a myriad of reasons.. some are from pounds.. others are from the Montreal SPCA & Trois Rivieres SPA.. I truly applaud their efforts now working with the rescues instead of euthanizing so many as before they give/transfer those we in rescue can re-home..
.. The new administration is really trying to turn things around.. now they even give bordatella vaccine to the dogs to avoid " kennel cough " while they wait to be adopted.. Just that is so helpful to us in rescue as it protects our rescue population.. We the rescues can do the regular vaccines/rabies.. heart worm testing.. sterilizing and whatever vetting thats needed.. ie: teeth extractions or cleaning.. grooming.. +++ I wouldn't expect that from the SPCA's as they don't know who will be adopted.. where we in Rescue don't euthanize ever ( unless there is a life threatening condition ) We stick it out till the right owner comes along.. or they remain with us permanently. It's the reason we do need donations so badly its quite an expensive undertaking .. and the need is always there..
All this just to let you the readers know.. that the Montreal SPCA and Trois Rivieres SPA.. deserve some recognition as they rebuild their reputation... I know I appreciate the efforts they are putting into place..

Hoover and The RAIN.. HAHA
.. My Hoover is NO fan of rain.. well no basset is.. I think they are fearful of drowning in a puddle haha.. anyways today its pouring out .. I dug out his raincoat.. well needless to say he was quite a hit with the rescues here.. I'm sure they did not know what to make of him stylin and profilin..
They proceeded to follow him out..
Then after doing his thing.. He looked up at me as if to say.. Put DOWN that dam camera..
So I did.. but only for a minute while I let Patatoo try it..
Hoovy accompanied her.. He was trippin I'm sure.. he never lends his stuff..
Yup never a dull moment..

D.J. A Red & White Basset
D.J. is a 3 year old Red & White Basset Hound that was brought into Polk County (FL) Animal Control as part of an animal cruelty case weighing only 36 lbs. Yes this is what Basset Rescues have to deal/cope with sadly.. Can you imagine what this boy has gone through..
D.J. is a special needs boy. We believe D.J. has a broken femur and possible nerve damage to the leg. He is extremely malnourished and is also heartworm +. D.J. got his name from the vet, Dr. Joe, who informed us that with some extensive medical care and a lot of TLC D.J. would be able to have a happy, healthy hound life.
D.J. is in Suncoast Basset Rescue's care and will need to gain weight before he can have the extensive surgery and to be treated for heartworms. He has a long road ahead of him and is a prime example of why Suncoast Basset Rescue exisits.
We feel fortunate to be a part of D.J.'s recovery and will keep regular updates coming on D.J.'s Progress.
UPDATE #1
D.J. was evaluated by the vet - his injury is a broken femur, and the injury is about 3-4 weeks old. This poor guy had suffered for quite some time. He is being treated and he sadly is infested with Heart Worm Disease. The main goal is to get him back into a healthier state so that we can treat his Heart Worms. He is coming along and it will be a long process. Fortunately he is in a foster home that has the time and willingness to see him through, no matter the length of time he needs.
UPDATE #2
"DJ" is doing really good. He is getting around very good considering all he has gone through.
He can get up and move around on his own. He is now growling when he wants to play, where before when we first got him he would not make a sound. He likes to try and follow Judy and I around the house when he is out to exercise. As for his eating, well he is now wanting to eat everything in the house, and drinks plenty of water. "DJ" is a very loving hound, he just wants a friend, someone to bond to.
As of today "DJ" weighs according to my scale 44lbs. Which is a an approx. 8.2lbs weight gain since we got him.
"DJ" still has a long way to go. He is still having problems with his front feet, and we are not sure what direction the broken femur is going to go. He is still in a splint, and we are looking at it being removed here in the next week. Where it will be re-evaluated by the vet.
UPDATE # 3 8/16/2008
DJ went through his surgery with no problems. He has also completed
his treatment for "Whip worms". Also he has just been started on his
heart worm treatment. DJ is doing great he has gained 12.2 lbs. He is really looking good.. His personality is really coming out. He loves to play with our
Phoebe, who is in love with him....... She lets DJ sleep on her bed
with her and eat out of her dish, and that is a first on both counts..
The one thing that we have found to be a bit strange with DJ is his
bark. He has a bark like a screech owl, I am not kidding you have
never heard anything like it.... but that is "DJ". His hind leg is healing well, he is now putting a bit of weight on it as he walks. The Vet said that he will always have a funny little twist to his leg, but it will be use able. His front feet, well we will just have to wait and see how his strength progresses, before we decide what has to be done there.
"DJ" is a wonderful boy, he will make someone a fantastic family
member

Love A Senior
Why adopt an "older dog?'Like Ashton
I believe this explains it all
One By One
One by one, they pass by my cage... too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play. Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore. It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed, a place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail. Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong, I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head, can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day, the younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope, you saw my face and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey and the legs bent with age, and felt I still had life beyond this cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed, and shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play and you talk to me low, you talk to me dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another, but you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give you, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week or for years, we will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new, my thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear, of the person who made my last days so dear.

Sleeping with MickyMouse Then she left Hoover moved in..
while continuing to be with Walter another pup..
Happy little guy..
Him and Tommy loved to play.. Inside for a moment.. Gentle nuzzle from Micky..
Out for more playing Gotcha Micky now.. Then time to nap again and dream..
..
Yes life is tough for the puppies that arrive in the rescue.. Micky & Hoover are GREAT step parents..

Rescues Are Like The Starfish..
Once upon a time there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean to do his
writing. He had a habit of walking on the
beach before he began his work.
One day he was walking along the shore.
As he looked down the beach, he saw a
human figure moving like a dancer. He
smiled to himself to think of someone
who would dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw that it was a
young man and the young man wasn't
dancing, but instead he was reaching
down to the shore, picking up something
and very gently throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out, "Good
morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean, past the breaking waves and said - "It made a difference for that one."

Challenges of Rescues
.. I belong to a group of individuals that do rescue transport to TRY to get dogs to their forever homes all over Canada and the USA.. called Cross Boarder Dog Rescue.. We know not everyone out there can have volumes of dogs but through word of mouth new drivers sign up to help do legs of a transport.. Often the legs are 60 miles.. its not a huge commitment really but in the life of that " Dog " it means the difference often between life and death .. as many are rescued from kill shelters or pounds that are overwhelmed with dogs.. Each rescue has a story.. many heartbreaking.. Yes it goes on everywhere.. puppy mills are raided.. animal hoarders are turned in by neighbors.. then there are just regular folks that have to choose between food on their table or food for the dog/dogs.. often the choice is simple for them.. The Pound.. or abandoned by the side of the road.. Or then again just last sunday I was called up to Saint Sauveur to get a basset pup 3-4 months old abandoned .. no rhyme or reason.. just left to fend for himself.. How long could he have lasted.. no telling but I'm sure not long..
.. So if anyone reading this has a bit of time to help transport a dog.. please think about signing up.. at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CBDR/
This group helps rescues on both sides of the border move dogs freely from shelters, humane societies, animal controls and rescue groups to forever home, foster homes and other rescues. Notices are posted about dogs in need, urgent situations and plea's for help. Transport help and home visits can also be requested on list. As with all groups, respect and courtesy of others is expected.
If you have any questions on this group, feel free to write to CBDR-owner@yahoogroups.com for details ..
I Thank You.. For Those That Cannot Speak..

The Generocity of Basseteers
.. I think basseteers are GREAT folks.. today I received a case (36) children's books by a Published Basseteer named Cathy L. Rudert she is the Author of Lily.. A Basset Hounds Tail of Love.. I was so surprised to get this delightful donation for the rescue.. as well She sent some to Alyson my little basseteer in Quebec City fighting for her life with leukemia everyday.. Her Dad called me today to tell me the news of this special gift arriving for Alyson.. as well others that have read my writings about her.. Yes I have so much faith in the Universe and regular basseteers.. who have shown this little girl.. that relative strangers CARE about her wellbeing and go the distance to bring her a smile during these awful cancer treatments she goes through weekly.
.. Personally I HOPE all the folks that have shown this little basseteer joy receive great big deposits in their Grace Bank Accounts as their Random Acts of Kindness are truly a blessing to her.
THANK YOU ALL.. You can Order a book on www.bassethoundrescuequebec.com Catalogu page
