JJ's New Angel Guardian

.. Well today JJ has an angel taking care of him in Ottawa.. I couldn't want better for him.. She is as big hearted as they come and will give great harbor to my boy for now.. Fosters are not easy to come by but sometimes they come when least expected.. So now I don't have to worry as much about him doing allot of extra damage to his joints as he will be the only dog in the house with a cat as company.. Here he was playing all the time.. and stopping when I felt he might have pain.. So this transition to new digs might cause some anxiety.. but I'm sure his new guardian M.. will do her best to make sure he adjusts well..

Thanks M.. You know who you are.. surely a big deposit will be donated into your Grace bank account..

Massena Today

.. I needed to get away a few hours today.. all this with JJ has me very perplexed.. I am trying to wrap my head around the whole thing.. a year or better crated.. multiple surgeries.. finding a foster to dedicate this time to him.. not easy at all.. I will be better able to decide once I get all the facts but that doesn't help my worry about this little guy.. who has such a spark within him you just cannot believe.. He sleeps beside me and has such trust in his eyes that I will know exactly what to do.. Ya.. right.. even time away he still was on my mind.. Oh well I'll deal with this as best I can..

JJ Will Need Both Legs Fixed

.. Today I saw Dr. L. Leger orthopedic surgeon here in Montreal.. he looked over JJ and explained what was going on with is front legs.. my heart sinking all the while.. this boy will need multiple surgeries to correct his legs.. and this will take probably a year plus of recovery time.. limiting his movement to crate living most of the time except to go potty.. He is just a 7 month old pup.. how can he be expected to endure this.. DAM those backyard breeders.. The surgeries will run around $10,000.00 he explained .. I'm sure he saw my expression .. he explained Helen.. your going to have to do some serious fundraising for him as well for your other rescues.. my head was spinning I admit.. but I told him I was confident.. as I was always told that " The Universe won't give you more than you can handle " Yes its testing me yet again.. He will phone Saint Hyacinth Veterinarian College to get me an appointment ASAP.. as his bones are growing daily..

Stay tuned..

Disappointing Day

.. Well I took JJ in for his neutering and asked my regular vet to have a look at his leg to see if she might be able to fix it.. well she is the second vet now that finds it beyond their scope of expertise.. So Monday I'm going to see Montreal's orthopedic surgeon to see if he can fix his leg.. Its so sad to me that this poor fella will even with the corrective surgery will likely develop arthritis in his latter years.. All thanks to those silly people that breed recklessly..

He is resting now came through todays surgery with flying colors..

Assessment On JJ's Leg

.. Well today I took JJ to see Dr. Lalonde in Ontario .. she is known for her magic in correcting joints.. However when she saw JJ she knew he was more serious than she would even attempt.. he will need an orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Luc Leger here in Montreal.. he taught her and he is the " go to " guy for this kind of problem.. So tomorrow while he is under anesthetic I will have xrays done before he gets neutered.. Poor little guy.. just 7 months old ..

JJ 's Leg

.. This again is the work of a " BACK YARD BREEDER " who has no clue..

Photobucket

Corrective surgery will be costly on this guy for sure let alone his neutering and vaccines.. I shake my head at these fools who try to make an easy buck .. Shame on them.. I am however greatful his owner called me instead of euthanasia for him ..

A New Boy

.. Well today I received an email about a boy 7 month old who needs surgery for a crooked joint on his front leg and the family has three children so they cannot afford this.. So I sent an email in return to let me know where and when I can get this little guy.. Guess I'll wait to hear patiently and get ready to drive.. Stay tuned..

Updated: Here he is..notice his front right joint.. I'll have it evaluated for surgery for this kind of bowed leg and joint will end up very painful in years to come.. it must be corrected.

Males VS Females

.. I am often asked for female bassets.. in rescue I don't get to choose.. most females end up with back yard breeders or puppy millers sadly.. but given I have 2 males and 1 female myself I think males are much more affectionate and cuddly.. My girl is a little more independent and aloof so I cannot really say one is better than the other I really don't feel that males should be overlooked in lieu of a female.. It would be interesting to do a pole about the topic.. Alas though its late and I'm tired.. tomorrow is another day..

Good Night

Happy Easter

.. Well folks its Easter here at BHRQ and the hounds just had all their treats.. they are such a good gang I have now.. Piper.. Moose and Hooch are getting along very well indeed..
.. today we all will be going off to the dog park to socialize with some other canines should be a hoot getting everyone in the van.. However I think Percy will pass.. he'll enjoy the quiet time here.. at his favorite past time.. SNOOZING..haha

Happy Easter Everyone..

Good Friday

.. Well I'm really tired.. this week has been crazy.. I've been so busy .. I've driven to Quebec City.. Ottawa.. Huntington .. Casselman Ontario.. and allot locally vet appointments plus plus plus.. I thought after the puppies were placed I'd have a little down time.. but alas there are always dogs in need....

I had an email regarding my PBGV in Kitchener .. his trainer/behaviorist is coming onto her busy time so I need to pull him out of there.. This is a concern that is sending me scrambling.. He has made some headway but again shuffling him out of his environment may set him back.. stability is everything to bassets.. and this one is no exception.. Harry will as I pledged get that elusive "Forever Home" maybe here in Quebec.. I'll see how it goes but for now I need to make new arrangements for this abused boy. from this Photobucket

To now happier Photobucket

but still hides sadly..

Tradegy Of a " FREE " Pet

The Tragedy of "Free To Good Home"

© Copyright 1997-2000, PetRescue.Com

Most people have good intentions when they advertise a cat or dog as "Free To Good Home". They care what happens to the animal and are not interested in making money. All they want to do is find a nice family that is willing to give the pet a loving, responsible home.

The tragedy occurs when the animal is mistakenly put into a situation where it is neglected, abandoned, abused, or even sold for lab experimentation. Sadly, this sort of thing happens thousands of times each day across America.

Giving any pet away is misguided. People tend not to value what they don't pay for. If you charge a nominal fee of $35-$45 or more for an animal, the new owner is more likely to take their commitment to the pet seriously. A free pet is a disposable pet!

Paying a fee for a pet shows good faith on the part of the new owner and demonstrates their willingness to properly care for the animal. The truth is, there is no such thing as a "free" pet anyway. By the time a cat or dog is checked out by a vet, including shots, worming, health testing, and spay/neuter, a "free" pet will easily cost in excess of $100, and that's just for starters. A responsible person who would properly take care of an animal will understand this and will not be opposed to paying a reasonable fee for a healthy pet, especially if some or all of these health items have already been taken care of.

Still not convinced? Then ask yourself these questions, "If a person cannot afford to pay an adoption fee for a pet, how will they be able to afford the normal expenses of proper pet care? And how will they ever afford vet bills when the pet gets sick?"

If you are uncomfortable with asking a fee for the pet, consider including food, toys, supplies, etc. as an added incentive. The idea is not to make a profit, but to ensure the good intentions of the new owner. In any event, the animal should be "fixed" and have its "shots" before it is adopted out and these costs alone can easily equal $45 or more. Use the adoption fee to recoup your expenses.

One final thought on this subject - if you absolutely don't want to take any money yourself, ask the adoptor to make the check out to a local animal shelter or SPCA instead. These organizations can surely use the help!
What can happen to a pet that is given free to a casual, uncommitted owner?

*

Abandoned to the streets. This is the most likely scenario that occurs when an uncommitted owner tires of a pet. Street animals suffer every day of their short lives. The end always comes painfully, either from violent trauma or from lingering disease.
*

Handed over to Animal Control and euthanized. People who do not take their responsibilities seriously always take the easy way out!
*

Marginally Owned. The pet will not be cared for properly and is often allowed to roam the streets.
*

Abused. The owner will not make the effort to properly train the animal. Often this leads to inappropriate responses from the owner and abuse of the pet when it "misbehaves".

Next, we would like you to be aware that there are dishonest people who routinely obtain animals for profit by fraudulently answering "Free To Good Home" ads. They are usually very persuasive and friendly. They know all the "right" answers to your questions because they do this sort of thing on a regular basis. Some may even bring their kids along to make you think they are a loving family!

The most important thing you can do to discourage this kind of person is to charge an adoption fee! This makes it much more difficult for them to realize a profit so they will usually not bother contacting you.
What can happen to an animal if you let one of these con artists have it?

*

Used to "live train" fighting dogs. The animal you expected to be a pet is used to bait a fighting dog and is literally torn to pieces.
*

Sold at Flea Markets or Auctions to anybody who happens along. Most of the time these animals are neglected, kept in cramped, unsanitary conditions and often become sick and diseased.
*

Sold to a Class-B Dealer who then resells the animal to a research facility. People who practice the despicable act of rounding up strays to sell them are referred to as "Bunchers". At the research facility, the animal may suffer abuse and most likely will be euthanized after they are finished with it.
*

Used for breeding stock in a "Puppy Mill". The living conditions in most of these establishments are deplorable. Bitches have continuous litters, one after the another.
*

Used as live food or bait for exotics like snakes or alligators.
*

Sacrificed in cult rituals. Some people find this hard to believe, but the FBI has many files documenting this kind of activity in our country.

How can you help to prevent these tragedies?

1.

Convince your local newspapers to post warnings in their pet classified sections! A lot of papers across the country are already doing this.
2.

Call "Free To Good Home" ads and warn them! Check newspapers regularly and let people know what could happen to their pet and tell them how to prevent this avoidable situation.
3.

Advise people not to adopt out pets at Halloween! Solid black and solid white cats are especially in danger at this time of the year. Cult members and vicious pranksters are on the lookout for animal victims. It is a common practice of most shelters and rescue organizations to never adopt out black or white cats during the Halloween season.

Alyson & Betty

I don't know if you remember back last year about Alyson.. she was undergoing leukemia treatment and had a wish for a basset.. Well I fulfilled that wish with God's Grace and here is Alyson today her 7th. birthday.. she isn't out of the woods yet as far as treatment.. but she is still here to fight.. She has been my rock many a times because my silly problems are nothing compared to this little basseteers .. She humbles me often with her spirit.. You can read about her on an old post here..

Farley

Hi Helen,

We had a great first day with Farley! I did take pictures to send but forgot my camera today. We spent all day outside raking our yard and getting all of my many gardens ready for the Spring. He loved it!-it was like a game to him. We also had about 10 kids and their parents next door for a 5 year old’s birthday party and they have a 2 year old Sheppard X that is Farley’s new best buddy. All the kids (and the parents) just loved him because he is so friendly. I cannot believe how well behaved he is being. He loves it up where we are too because it like a wildlife preserve and he loves selling the tracks from the jack rabbits, deers and other dogs. Anyways, thanks again for connecting us with Farley and we will keep in touch.

All the Best,

Amber

Puppy Feedback From New Owners

Well Mater(squiggle), is doing just fine... in fact he's doing extremely well. His house training is coming along nicely, though as I write this my wife is cleaning up a little accident... such is life. We named him 'Mater' as in Tow-Mater from the Movie 'CARS', and he is already coming to that name when called, our son just loves him, though very tentative at first they are really getting along. Noah and me will run and hide and Mater will track us down!!! Noah also has taken to 'reading' Mater stories when Mater is relaxing on the nice big doggie bed we got him! He has already met his new Vet and has his dog tags and his first real appt. is this coming week. His personality is just too funny, not like any puppy I've ever known... he really listens so well, we've already mastered 'sit' and are well on our way to getting 'stay' as well... we make it a point to get him active outside as much as possible as he really likes relaxing in the house!! Not that we're complaining... he's walking on a leash fairly well, which surprised me, as my parent's hound always has his nose to the ground and is always pulling at the leash... that being said the neighbor was laughing at my wife today, for when she and Mater and my son went for a walk, Mater decided to object and just laid down on the side of the road in front of the neighbor's house, refusing to budge!!!! I'll send photos some other day as I'm having trouble attaching them right now.
Talk to you later,
Adam

Helen
I was going to write sooner but as you know it has been crazy here but amazing. WE have started a routine with Lia and Fernando. It works and they seems to like it as well. Lia is only going to the bathroom out side now....no pee pee pads needed (knock on Wood). But she is even going to the door to ask to go out side. I have taken her for walks with Fernando and alone. She is doing great both ways. She loves her big brother and he loves her also. They are snuggling and kissing each other. I took her out to see my dad in the west Island and Lia freaked out in the car but once she realized who was grandpa and enjoyed her day she slept the whole way back home.

She is eating like a star and only had a little runs but nothing out of the norm. WE are going to see DR. Bernie on Monday and I will keep you posted.I have had about 2 hours of sleep. Lia snores like crazy but it is funny! She work up howling last night twice and in a panic. She was better this morning and I was able to take her for a walk with out her crying. Fernando and her are getting along but he wants all her toys.
As tired as I am-I love her and Gorden and I are happy.
I will send you photo's soon.

Hope you are good Helen,
Ali

hi helen!!

wink had 2 vistitors yesterday (extra too our neighbors that is!!) friend of ours had too come see wink as he had heard all about her from his mom and sister, thought she was pretty great and could not believe the way she throws flash around !(i think he lets her win!!) then his sis came over later too use the putor and stayed too watch the floor show. they must have worn thenselves out as they both slept in till 6:30 and she did not peep when i went out too check the barns early am as she sometimes does! she looks forward too my niece coming up in the morning but once everyone goes their way, she goes to her crate and eats breakfast. right now they are heaving the heavy middle weight title match i think, kinda hard too convince wink she is not the same size as flash! and flash that he is not as small as wink and can not fit under the chairs! raining more today so have to wait for the water and mud to clear up before we go for our walk!

Hi Helen,

Puppy is doing well. We still don't have her named yet (we have a short list and should decide soon). We are working on the house training and it's coming along. We are being as vigilent as we can so the training can move along. Andrew takes her to work and she is enjoying this. We all love her, especially the kids. They were a bit young for our previous dog Morgan and didn't seem as attached to her as they are with our new puppy.

I'll keep you updated.

Nancy

Hi Helen:
Everything is going quite well.
Had the puppy checked over by the vet he was surprised by her good nature.
My neighbour vet also has seen her and said she looks in great condition.
I think we are going to call her Sassy.
She really teases Buster and for the most part he plays well with her but has become a little too energetic a couple of times. But she lets him know and uses those needle teeth to grab his ears.
She really likes cuddling and as you said lets some big whines when she wants up.
Has slept two nights in a crate upstairs and has only howled for about 5 minutes, and then slept until 6.
Getting quite good at peeing outside.I mean she is just always on the go. Then she goes off to dreamland until she is startled and starts all over again.
She uses her needle needle teeth to grab his ears.
She really likes cuddling and as you said lets some big whines when she wants up.
Has slept two nights in a crate upstairs and has only howled for about 30 minutes, and then slept until 6.
Getting quite good at peeing outside but has used the dining room consistently for her solid waste - Lucky they are solid!
Biggest problem is she wants Buster's food and he wants hers!
Thanks again for the lovely girl. Will continue to try to e mail photos

What a Scare

.. Tonight I got a call from my Trois Rivieres connection telling me about a lost basset in the Frontenac area of Montreal.. I looked in my 2008 files as I had one adopted out down there when I was on sick leave in November.. Well low and behold it was him.. JP.. I was heartsick.. I asked Louise to call him and see what he was doing to find him as I knew that Berger Blanc patrolled that area and they are a kill shelter.. Well a few minutes later Lou called me back.. he was found there by the adoptive owner and had to pay a fine.. but got him back.. Thank God as I wouldn't have slept very well tonight.. I guess BHRQ bassets have Angels looking out for them too..

Thank You

.. Thank You Universe.. a fine lady has stepped up to take in the brothers below.. They will have a great life now with this dedicated basset lover.. I met with her yesterday and she was smitten with them.. so I will deliver them to her Sunday .. Oh I am so thrilled for these boys..

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

The Two Brothers..

.. Well yesterday I was also Graced with these two brothers.. they are seniors of 6+ and 9+ .. They both are very sweet.. They went and enjoyed some time at the dog park where they could socialize and be observed.. they did well in the van.. mind you the older one needed a hand up.. but thats expected.. for as a pup he had a broken front paw that has left him with a strange gate.. but he seems none the worse for it.. but I will see via my vet if anything can be done about it.. So for the most part these are two special boys..who will need a BIG hearted person/family to open their home to them.. and let their golden years be loving and stable..

Photobucket

Moose..

.. Moose is a great little basset with a big voice.. He was given up after another short period with a family who had a different opinion of what living with a basset might be like.. I do wish people would research this wonderful breed before engaging one.. so this would not keep happening.. I mean look at this boy..

Photobucket

He has an eye infection and was neutered yesterday.. I will find him his Forever Home as well..

Piper.. A Christmas Gift 08

.. This is three year old Piper... he was a " gift for the kids " last Christmas.. a couple months later this boy has been shuffled here.. I don't know how many times he has been shuffled as they purchased him from a kill shelter in east end Montreal.. where he was turned in .. Now look at this boy.. the sadness in his face speaks volumes to me.. I will prevail and find him a home that will change this boy's expression to one of joy..
