... Well folks a new year is coming and I feel that I'd like to say Thank you to all who gave me encouragement throughout this tough year.. I won't be to sad to see it pass.. on the other hand I accomplished allot.. Its my birthday today so I probably will not be writing again until the first of the year.. as everyone is partying today.. I just hope everyone stays safe and see's this new year with great joy in their heart.. 2010 WOW its incredible.. its like the millennium just passed..
.. I've decided to set a few goals for this year that includes the Universe and I making it possible for me to have an opportunity to find a place more suited to rescue than my little residential house is.. I seriously cannot keep having this municipality after me for doing rescue..
.. Another goal is to help plan a nice celebration for my Dad's 100th birthday..
.. Another to add another challenge to my volunteer work.. there is such need out there..
.. Lastly to take better care of my health..
So folks I just want to wish You All The Best for this upcoming 2010.. May it bring to you a few new pleasures..
Oh and remember to do a few Random Acts of Kindness.. in 2010

... As rescues we sometimes have to move bassets to get them to their forever homes or to another rescue that has space.. One of our problems is we have no one in the prairie provinces.. We can get them through Ontario and met in Alberta but no where in between.. If you know anyone in western Canada that might be willing to work with Dog Relays.. please let me know..
Thanks..

Basset Mill
Your Petstore Pup...
Cherish your new pet store pup -
Stand always by his side.
Mend his ills and give him hugs
and lots of fun car rides.
Feed him well and let him run
to build his body strong.
Play with him and give him treats.
Love him his whole life long.
You'll soon become his hero.
He will not ask you for much.
He'll trade his lifelong loyalty
for your kind word and touch.
Count him among your blessings,
as you are his blessing, too,
but then please do just one thing more,
When every day is through.
Take time to look into his eyes
each night you tuck him in.
I bet you'll see reflected there,
two other pups like him.
They've never had a family,
soft bed, good food, or fun.
They live life out in a wire box -
and never get to run.
They suffer searing heat at times,
at others freezing cold,
as weeks and months and years drag by
While they are growing old.
So think about his mom and dad
who shine there through his eyes,
and remember all the mill dogs
who are paying with their lives.
If they had ever had a chance,
they'd have grown up like him, too,
with years of love to give and get
before their lives were through.
You'll never see them face to face -
Such miracles are rare -
But pray for your pup's mom and dad,
'cause someone ought to care...
Here is a lucky one I just rescued..
Lost In Transport Relay
.. It is a sad day for me as one of my rescues from Kentucky was lost in transit when he slipped his harness.. He is microchipped however that is all his harness stayed with the driver.. So barley the 8 month old 25 pound basset is somewhere in upstate New York.. this was my message yesterday morning before I left to go meet the relay in Cornwall..
MISSING IN THE COLDEN/BOSTON, NY
AREA:
Barley was on a transport from KY to Canada today and was at his overnight’s house and unfortunately, slipped out of his harness. He took off into the darkness. Margaret has called her neighbors, the state police as well as animal control. The area she is in is not well lit, but she is going with flashlights to see if she can spot him. If anyone is in the area of Boston/Colden, NY and can help go look for Barley, PLEASE DO! Please let’s help find this baby. It is VERY cold and is snowing. He might very well know his name, but might be too frightened to come when called.
AREA LAST SEEN:
“It looked like he was going into the horse pasture across the street but I think I caught a glimpse of him running down (south-east) on Lower East Hill Rd (town of Boston, NY). The bottom of the hill is 1 -1 1/2 miles down and it ends at State Road, Route 240. in Colden NY.”
BARLEY’S INFORMATION:
Approx 9 mo old basset hound mix. He is brown with white on his chest. Approximately 35 pounds . Does not have a collar on. He is microchipped and neutered.
Luckily I was able to get the mill dog Sally up here safely she is doing well..
^^^^ Sally..
If you are someone that prays.. say a small one for Barley's safe return..

Twas The Night Before Christmas.. Basset Edition
Twas the night before Christmas and all was quiet and sound,
Not a creature was stirring not even my Hound.
She was snug in her bed all tucked in for the night,
Until she suddenly awoke when something gave her a fright.
It was the sound of some footsteps on the rooftop she heard,
Maybe it?s a possum, a squirrel, or a bird.
So she ran to the window not knowing what would appear,
And to her surprise she saw Santa with reindeer.
She waddled outside hoping Santa would play,
When she finally made it to him, she let out a great Hound bay.
Santa stepped to her and gave a soft pat on the head,
Hush now little Basset, I think everyone?s in bed.
But Santa, said the Basset, I?m so happy you?re here,
I want to go with you tonight and spread cheer.
Well then, my little Basset as he held her by the paw,
He said to her come and we will spread it to all.
As she leaped into the sleigh she saw a great bag of toys,
Is this what you bring to all the little Basset girls and boys?
Why yes, said Santa, I show everyone love,
Now hold on tight he said as they flew high above.
Up higher, up higher she flew in the sleigh without fears,
As Santa looked to her, he saw her great flapping ears.
It was quite the adventure for the Basset Hound that night,
She brought presents to a cat and they didn?t even fight.
And to a Hound family of ten, lots toys did they need,
Ten Bassets in one house is a lot of mouths to feed.
Worn out with so much fun the little Hound did tire,
So Santa brought her home and laid her down by the fire.
A wooden house she lived in and the wind made it creek,
Before Santa could leave he got a warm lick on the cheek.
Santa just smiled and with a glimmer in his eye,
He winked to her once and he said his goodbye.
As she lay there in her bed, she glanced at the Christmas tree,
Underneath was a giant bone labeled To: Houndie.
She listened to his sleigh bells as he took off for his flight,
Shouting, ?A Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight?.

Sally and Barley
... Here is Sally she's a used puppy mill dog.. finally out of that life but left with the reminders on her figure.. How sad a life this girl had.. caged and pregnant months on end.. give birth.. 6-8 weeks later her pups gone.. and another male to impregnate her.. this goes on and on for mill dogs until they burn out.. Alas she now has a chance at a life of leisure I hope.. many will overlook a girl like this for she isn't quite perfect.. but with the wisdom of the Universe I hope that the right someone steps up for this girl..
Then there is Barley.. just 8 months old and already dumped several times.. why .. well basically the people who have adopted him have expected him to live crated 8-10 hours a day so the shelter that had him needed the room and asked if I thought I could get him a home with a family that would let him have a life outside of a cage.. He basically grew up in one and now that he has his freedom he really doesn't want to go backwards.. He's a good guy just needs to be with his family.. He's a real cutie.. I hope someone gives him a good life.

Some Days I Shake My Head
... Yesterday was definitely a day for that.. I received an email about Riley.. They said I hope we get him for free.. I was stunned.. You know people don't realize the expense with a rescue dog.. here is how most go..
Phone rings or email comes.. I have a basset I can no longer look after ( whatever lame reason I get ) .. well where are you.. usually its 60-100 miles away at the least I've picked up as far as Beaufort Quebec.. Almonte Ontario.. and all points in between.. So I say okay I'll come and get him/her .. thats gas both ways.. chances are they are not sterilized or vetted.. so a trip to the vet.. that can run $250.00 to $350.00 depending whats needed.. sometimes more.. then they need recovery time.. then they come here for who knows how long.. now all this time they are being cared for .. fed the best food to improve their health.. that can run $70.00 a bag.. then someone emails about fostering or adopting.. this means a home visit.. now some of my fosters are in Ottawa.. as are some of my adoptees.. So I run up and down the 417 frequently.. to show a dog or home visit.. Then if someone wants a " Trial " period.. again I must take the dog there.. more gas.. If it works out then its just a case of the final contract.. but if it doesn't I go back more gas.. this also may be in a time frame of weeks.. In the meantime I take out of my pocket to keep this rescue going.. Yes there are fees to adopt but rarely does it cover the costs.. I don't get many donations.. I cannot remember the last one.. No I'm not complaining.. it just BUGS me when people say " what he/she is not free " or " to expensive " If they feel that way then surely they cannot afford to keep that dog in good health as premium food and vetting yearly is not cheap.. and NOT doing it puts your pet in peril.. So I shake my head.. Sigh!!!!
End of rant..

A Rescued Bassets Christmas Wish
'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full - we are lost but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,
They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!
But now we sit here and think of the days..
we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways,
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew -
now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash?
We "jump on the children:, "don't come when they call",
we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.
If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.
We were left in the backyard, or worse - let to roam-
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye...
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."
So now here we are, all confused and alone...
in a shelter with others who long for a home.
The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,
They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer...
we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.
We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads..
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.
Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears --
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.
If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn --
could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?
We count on your kindness each day of the year --
can you give more than hope to everyone here?
Please make a donation to pay for the heat...
and help get us something special to eat.
The shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
and more of us will, if more people will give.

Katie & Darcy Arrived
.. The transport was on time.. both Katie and Darcy were pretty tired and anxious.. Luckily Katie had been adopted before her arrival by a sweet family in Saint Hilaire.. She is very lucky and happy there to be in the company of another basset .. It was great to deliver her yesterday.. ..
Darcy on the other hand was a very nervous wreck.. there was some abuse in her past as her tail was broken twice for fun.. She kept to herself once she arrived here.. however today she was out in the yard with the gang howling.. a good sign.. She still stays here in my home office as she seems more at ease and I don't mind.. She will come around with the others I'm very patient..
Brandy another basset came up with the transport but she too was adopted in Ottawa.. so this has been a successful run..
Now there are some seniors that are desperate to get out of the kennel they live in.. its rather grim but they are alive.. Its difficult to place seniors.. I really don't get that though.. They are so much easier to take care of.. they also so appreciate a second chance to have love and comfort in their lives.. I guess I'll have to put it out to the Universe to bring VERY special hearts to BHRQ for these seniors.. I put them on a special page on the website for all to see.. I hope not to have them there long.. they already have been waiting months for someone to step-up.. So I have my fingers crossed for them..

Bassets and Transport..
.. Today I'm off to Ontario to pick up some rescued bassets from a kill shelter in the USA.. I think their economy is causing allot of dogs to be turned in sadly.. However I am hopeful for these girls.. They have been on a very long trip.. so they will finally be able to take a breath once they are here.. with no fear of being euthanized because they were unwanted..
Yup BHRQ will help bassets from anywhere.. I'm off..

A Rescuers Answering Machine
.. This was shared with me today.. I thought it interesting and could relate on some levels..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello: You have reached ___-____, Tender Hearts Rescue. Due to the
high volume of calls we have been receiving, please listen closely to
the following options and choose the one that best describes you or
your situation:
Press 1 if you have a 10-year-old dog and your 15-year-old son has
suddenly become allergic and you need to find the dog a new home
right away.
Press 2 if you are moving today and need to immediately place your
150 pound, 8-year-old dog.
Press 3 if you have three dogs, had a baby and want to get rid of
your dogs because you are the only person in the world to have a
baby and dogs at the same time.
Press 4 if you just got a brand new puppy and your old dog is having
problems adjusting so you want to get rid of the old one right away.
Press 5 if your little puppy has grown up and is no longer small and
cute and you want to trade it in for a new model.
Press 6 if you want an unpaid volunteer to come to your home TODAY
and pick up the dog you no longer want.
Press 7 if you have been feeding and caring for a "stray" for the
last three years, are moving and suddenly determine it's not your
dog.
Press 8 if your dog is sick and needs a vet but you need the money
for your vacation.
Press 9 if you are elderly and want to adopt a cute puppy who is not
active and is going to outlive you.
Press 10 if your relative has died and you don't want to care for
their elderly dog because it doesn't fit your lifestyle.
Press 14 if you are calling at 6 a.m. to make sure you wake me up
before I have to go to work so you can drop a dog off on your way
to work.
Press 15 to leave us an anonymous garbled message, letting us know
you have left a dog in our yard in the middle of January, which is
in fact, better than just leaving the dog with no message.
Press 16 if you are going to get angry because we are not going to
take your dog that you have had for fifteen years, because it is
not our responsibility.
Press 17 if you are going to threaten to take your ten year old dog
to be euthanized because I won't take it.
Press 18 if you're going to get angry because the volunteers had the
audacity to go on vacation and leave the dogs in care of a trusted
volunteer who is not authorized to take your personal pet.
Press 19 if you want one of our PERFECTLY trained, housebroken, kid
and cat friendly purebred dogs that we have an abundance of.
Press 20 if you want us to take your dog that has a slight
aggression problem, i.e. has only bitten a few people and killed your
neighbor's cats.
Press 21 if you have already called once and been told we don't take
personal surrenders but thought you would get a different person this
time with a different answer.
Press 22 if you want us to use space that would go to a stray to
board your personal dog while you are on vacation, free of charge,
of course.
Press 23 if it is Christmas Eve or Easter morning and you want me to
deliver an eight week old puppy to your house by 6:30 am before
your kids wake up.
Press 24 if you have bought your children a duckling, chick or baby
bunny for Easter and it is now Christmas and no longer cute.
Press 25 if you want us to take your female dog who has already had
ten litters, but we can't spay her because she is pregnant again and
it is against your religion.
Press 26 if you're lying to make one of our younger volunteers feel
bad and take your personal pet off your hands.
Press 27 if your cat is biting and not using the litter box because
it is declawed, but you are not willing to accept the responsibility
that the cat's behavior is altered because of your nice furniture.
Press 28 if your two year old male dog is marking all over your house
but you just haven't gotten around to having him neutered.
Press 29 if you previously had an outdoor only dog and are calling
because she is suddenly pregnant.
Press 30 if you have done "everything" to housebreak your dog and
have had no success but you don't want to crate the dog because it
is cruel.
Press 31 if you didn't listen to the message asking for an evening
phone number and you left your work number when all volunteers are
also working and you are angry because no one called you back.
Press 32 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because
today is your daughter's birthday and you forgot when she was born.
Press 33 if your dog's coat doesn't match your new furniture and you
need a different color or breed.
Press 34 if your new love doesn't like your dog and you are too
stupid to get rid of the new friend (who will dump you in the next
month anyway) instead of the dog.
Press 35 if you went through all these 'options' and didn't hear
enough. This press will connect you to the sounds of tears being
shed by one of our volunteers who is holding a discarded old dog
while the vet mercifully frees him from the grief of missing his
family.
board your personal dog while you are on vacation, free of charge,
of course.
Press 23 if it is Christmas Eve or Easter morning and you want me to
deliver an eight week old puppy to your house by 6:30 am before
your kids wake up.
Press 24 if you have bought your children a duckling, chick or baby
bunny for Easter and it is now Christmas and no longer cute.
Press 25 if you want us to take your female dog who has already had
ten litters, but we can't spay her because she is pregnant again and
it is against your religion.
Press 26 if you're lying to make one of our younger volunteers feel
bad and take your personal pet off your hands.
Press 27 if your cat is biting and not using the litter box because
it is declawed, but you are not willing to accept the responsibility
that the cat's behavior is altered because of your nice furniture.
Press 28 if your two year old male dog is marking all over your house
but you just haven't gotten around to having him neutered.
Press 29 if you previously had an outdoor only dog and are calling
because she is suddenly pregnant.
Press 30 if you have done "everything" to housebreak your dog and
have had no success but you don't want to crate the dog because it
is cruel.
Press 31 if you didn't listen to the message asking for an evening
phone number and you left your work number when all volunteers are
also working and you are angry because no one called you back.
Press 32 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because
today is your daughter's birthday and you forgot when she was born.
Press 33 if your dog's coat doesn't match your new furniture and you
need a different color or breed.
Press 34 if your new love doesn't like your dog and you are too
stupid to get rid of the new friend (who will dump you in the next
month anyway) instead of the dog.
Press 35 if you went through all these 'options' and didn't hear
enough. This press will connect you to the sounds of tears being
shed by one of our volunteers who is holding a discarded old dog
while the vet mercifully frees him from the grief of missing his
family.
Max & Ginny & Oscar Jelly Beans
Ginny
Max
These two are a bonded pair of sweethearts really.. they tragically were the victims of a divorce .. but they are a resilient pair and have settled in well here and are playing all the time.. They will make fine additions to anyones home.. its so much easier with adult bassets they are past all the "puppy" craziness.. they are just pleasent to have around.. no muss no fuss..
Then there is Oscar Jelly Beans.. he is just 6 months old and full of beans hense the name.. but sweet none the less.. he is a little clingy as he is the victim of abandonment and shuffling around.. so he needs stability in his life and will be a fine companion ..
Sister's Have Their Forever Home..
Hello Everyone,
As many of you may have heard, I walked out of the ACC last week for good.
I spent six extremely frustrating, heartbreaking weeks working in the shelter environment; which was not what I agreed to when I was offered the job -- my job ended up being nothing like it was supposed to be, and not a good use of my time and effort... I could save far more pets if allowed to do what I was hired for.
I have seen and heard things that I will never forget; I believe I have post traumatic stress disorder because I keep seeing the faces of dogs that I promised homes to --only to find out they were in the freezer when I had finally found a home.
Every day it is like playing BEAT THE CLOCK WITH LIFE AND DEATH AND ALMOST ALWAYS LOSING! How many times can a heart break like that? I reached my limit, probably faster than most, but I believe that happens when you love animals as deeply as I do.
The need for people to get out adopt and foster is dire! There are NO words to describe what these animals endure - shelter life is hell on earth. Not because of anything intentionally done, but just because it is what it is... HELL before heaven --- either heaven in the form of a home, or heaven in the form of the Rainbow Bridge .
I truly feel like I have been to hell.
These poor pets don't have much chance once they enter those shelter doors because so few people actually go to the shelter to seek out a pet and only a small amount of adoptable pets are actually shown to the public because of limited space in the adoptions rooms.
There are so many desperate dogs and cats behind doors that the public has no access to, so no one knows they are there and opportunities are repeatedly missed for both adopters and the pets! The lucky ones are the ones that the New HOPE Girls and Maggie O'Neil get out... but they can only do so much and try so hard!!!
Also, another killer for me was seeing the betrayal on the faces of the pets whose owners surrendered them --- So many times I wanted to jump up from my desk and scream at these people who take the easy way out without ever thinking of what life will be like for their pet once they drive away.
Then there were the people who would round up the litters of kittens in their yards or the friendly cat that made the mistake of saying hello to them --- they would put them carriers and dumped off at the ACC as a stray!!! It infuriated me to watch their reactions when told that these pets could face euthanasia --- most just shrugged their shoulders. I will never get it or forget it!!!
The other daily tear-jerker for me was hearing the non-stop desperate cries, wails and barks of dogs who are anxious, scared, heartbroken and bored out of their minds. This is torture to an animal lover like me.....
Oh, and the cats and kittens!!!! Watching them decline each day was devastating.
I'd see them go from being happy and greeting me in the morning to depressed and so sick with upper respiratory infections that they were sneezing like crazy and had bubbles coming out of their noses. They looked and felt miserable, needed to be loved and treated with tons of care in a quiet place, but instead, they were stuck in cages without any love or real care.
Being exposed to these things day after day, took a toll on me. I felt tormented at the end of each day and cried through almost every dinner for the last six weeks ----- my poor boyfriend!!!
I have not had one good night's sleep in weeks... there are certain images that are deeply embedded in my mind!!!
My last heartbreak was a ten year old black cocker spaniel -- this dog visits me, or rather haunts me, every night at 2am. She was an owner surrender because of personal problems. She was scared to death and to top it off, she was blind.
I spent about ten minutes talking to this poor old dog with tears she couldn't see, flowing down my face. At that age, and being blind, a kill shelter was the last place on earth she deserved to end up or spend her last few days. I made her a promise I would find her a home... I got distracted and a few hours later I tried to pull up her kennel card so I could get all her information to send out one of my "famous emails" begging you all to help.... she was in the FREEZER already....I was too late, again!
My heart sank, I felt like I was kicked in the stomach and my eyes once again filled with tears.... To this little black cocker I say this, "I loved you and wanted to help you, but I was too late. I am so very sorry, but at least you are not terrified anymore by the sounds you could hear and the sights you couldn't see!"
I felt like I failed this poor little lady. I felt like I should have done more, acted quicker or thrown myself in front of her when they came to bring her to her moment of death. Oh how I am haunted by this poor thing. I guess I am too soft... so many others working in the shelter are NOT affected by this, perhaps they are used to the daily death, but daily death of innocent pets is something I can never get used to and if I did, then I couldn't live with myself!
Thanks much to everyone who read my desperate emails, forwarded them to family and friends and tried so hard to help me save as many as I could! I appreciated the support!
Remember, ALWAYS CONSIDER ADOPTING OR FOSTERING A SHELTER PET instead of PURCHASING!! ! THE NEED IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCURATELY DESCRIBE -- unless you spend a week in the shelter, you really have NO IDEA what the shelter life is like. I got an unforgettable education!
I am not saying that they have any other options there, they don't because they are contracted to take in everything surrendered.
I am saying that things could be done differently in terms of spectacular events and making the NEED known... and being more proactive in terms of letting adopters know that there are so many other pets behind the next set of doors that NEED homes...
My feeling is that no adopter should ever walk out of the shelter empty handed and without being asked, "what were you looking for, can I show you some more pets before you go?"
Yesterday, I heard on 1010Wins that the ACC was making it public that they were adopting out all cats over age one for free, and that they had not put any pets to sleep for space during the last three months!
To 1010Wins news I say this. "Space" is an interesting term.
Maybe it is not called "space" when you euthanize a dog or cat that has caught an UPPER RESPIRATORY OR KENNEL COUGH, or when you decide to change their behavior from mild or no concern to moderate or severe...(some valid, many not) but it is still death. And all these SICK animals or behavior issue animals are put to sleep to make space... so the wording is really interesting, and when did URI's and Kennel Cough become illnesses that couldn't be cured???
In my humble opinion, a dead animal is a dead animal and they should ALL COUNT!
If they came in alive, and leave dead, they should count as dead. Does anyone else agree?
Way too many leave in frozen in black bags. If things were done differently --- and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what is wrong, or to make the changes necessary ---- they would need fewer black bags!
I plan on continuing to do what I do best - saving them through adoption events and arranging for foster care. Because of my soft heart, I believe that I am better at a distance.
Us rescues up here transport from the USA all over to help workers/volunteers in kill shelters.. Its an everyday list sadly.. but we can only do what we can.. So please sign
Riley & Cooper
.. well yesterday and today I was able to get both these boys to their fosters.. Unfortunately they are both in the Ottawa region so I did a fair bit of driving each day.. I'm sure they both will adjust well Cooper is with 4 other dogs.. Riley has neighbor dogs.. so they won't be lonely.. I know when they are here its like they hit the mother load.. being that they have been rescued and their lives turned upside down I hold no expectations .. I let them be themselves have a good time here playing ectra so they can forget the crap they have been through.. mainly neutering .. vaccines.. worming ectra.. its quite traumatic.. Alas its no time before they are being bassets again as goofy as they are.. So now its just Ralphie I have to deliver to foster in Westmount tomorrow.. This will make room for the bonded pair I have coming in from Ontario.. they are the victims of a divorce sadly.. but they will be fine I'm sure.. I'll write about them later this week.. For now thats all the news..
Oh yes I also received some lovely crystal items and bookends.. plus the promise of a basset painting.. for my Auction.. Yay.. things are beginning..
Success or Virgil & Lex & Ruby
.. Well its been a good adoption week for BHRQ.. two lovely bassets Ruby and Virgil and one foxhound Lex have their forever homes.. YAY.. However its also been a busy week with rescues.. a seven year old boy Cooper and a 6 month old Ralphie and Millie 1.3 years old came in.. I still have the two 7.5 week old walker hound pups.. so its rather busy around here.. Millie is in foster now.. Cooper and Ralphie will go on the weekend.. this allows me to have room should the phone ring or an email come in to get a basset.. I wish I had more fosters though.. so I know I can step up when the need arises .. I was hoping after the CJAD interview I might get a few more and I guess I still might but the wait is always troubling..
I'm also in need of things for the fundraiser auction .. allot of my money has gone out over the last few months .. especially JJ's surgery put me behind the eight ball but no regrets.. the boys leg is great he has quality of life now with his new Mom Maureen.. she's the star in his recovery and life now..
I am hopeful that the Universe might smile on BHRQ.. as I know the holiday season is at large and pups will be bought as presents.. only for some to end up here.. I try to budget and plan.. anyways enough rambling..
Two More Come In..
.. Yes two more arrived a 1.2 year old girl and a 7 year old boy.. Needless to say they needed vaccines.. she needed spaying.. worming as well.. Here they are.. Meet Millie top photo and Cooper bottom.
both were to much trouble owners had no time for them.. Bassets need to be with family and loved as they are such a cuddly breed.. Awe well better here than tied to a tree or just abandoned..
Trixie & Sassy
.. recently I received two walker hounds that were 6 weeks old.. Why you might ask.. well they are girls.. yup you read right.. They are sweet little things and my Micky and hoover are acting like great foster parents again.. Here they are .. Sassy in the back.. Trixie up front..
Now aren't these sweet looking.. I would love for them to stay together .. wishful thinking on my part I suspect.. The Universe will do what its got to do.. as will I..
Have a good day..
The Interview
... Well I guess I did alright as the freeback I've received has been positive.. Now I just have to hope to have sparked some interest in BHRQ. The bassets I brought behaved exemplary I was proud of them.. Tommy liked both actually.. I think he will get one eventually as his love of this breed is so evident to me..
I brought up the fact that funding is low right now as quite a few dogs have come in and await various vetting..
Its my hope that I can do this Fundraising Auction and people call me with things I can use.. Its pretty difficult being a one woman show.. but I do my best.. I am greatful that I have a translator and a friend for when I need a break has an open door policy for me.. Oh well on with this day..
BHRQ Gets A Radio Interview On CJAD
... Well it's going to be this Wednesday at 11:00 .. The Tommy Schnurmacher show.. I cannot tell you how pleased I am to get this chance to get the word out about BHRQ.. We need all the publicity we can get.. as its been an incredible 18 months.. 60 plus bassets I have rehomed.. and more coming daily almost.. I thank the Universe for its help with this task.. I am often humbled on how it all works..
Anyway I just thought I'd let you know.. Cross your fingers I don't get to tongue tied.. :)
Wow 4 Bassets This Week
Crazy Week
.. Well its been a crazy week of basset rescue.. I got 3 new bassets all young and needing vetting of one sort or another.. and as I'm having municipal problems boarding has come into play as fosters are like hens teeth.. so needless to say more is going out than coming in.. Alas hopefully the Universe will smile on BHRQ and help us out one way or another.. Of late I find myself seriously hoping that I somehow find a municipality that will not fine me for having extra rescue dogs.. as well the space for them.. at this rate of them coming in my place really isn't conducive to 6-7-8- bassets although at one point months back I was harboring more than that.. it was crazy time..
Oh well I'm just rambling.. I have to find homes for Ruby.. DeKyper.. Smiley.. Lex.. for now.. Wish me luck.. they are all sweethearts..
JJ Now..
Lex .. Isn't he lovely..
.. This boy is just so darn lovable .. he presently is at his fosters up in Saint Adele and happy.. He is living with 2 goldens.. his foster reports that he is a pleasure to have.. This two year old has been shuffled around enough through no fault of his own.. he is VERY easy going.. just 2 years old..as you can see he is a bit of a mix.. 1/4 foxhound the rest basset.. with the temperament of the fun basset.. Now if anyone out there can give this boy a forever home please be in touch.. Thank You.. Helen
Pet Fair In Beaconsfield
Hi there.. just a quick post to say BHRQ will be at the Pet Fair Saturday in Beaconsfield at Centennial Park from 11-4.. Hope to see you there..
Tuesday, September 1, 2009
Thought I'd Update
.. Today I have some time to update this so I'm taking the opportunity.. My brother had his surgery it lasted 10.5 hours instead of the usual 5.. as it turned out his heart was in bad shape.. as was trying to find a vain to work with in his leg. He is back at home alone and being 60 and trying to recover is a challenge but he is doing his best.
Now for me.. I'm still living with the threat of the municipality giving me grief as I still have an extra dog here.. so I keep my patio door blind closed as that was how they caught me last time.. he went into my yard and on my deck in order to get pictures of the dogs in my house while I was out.. Talk about a sleaze. Thats why I couldn't beat the fine.. he had proof.So now like I said I keep my blinds closed at least until Dekyper is adopted. I have had calls for bassets but still I have no fosters to help me with them and it breaks my heart. It was SOOOOOOOO much easier when I could just go get them and bring them here.. no muss no fuss.. I have poor Lex still in a foster for months now and he needs to be moved as the family is back to school and he is alone for hours and not enjoying it at all... He is such a sweetie I don't understand why no one has asked about him...
Anyways I will keep plugging along. I will be doing the Beaconsfield Pet Fair on the 12th so I hope to maybe find some fosters there.. If you pray.. please add BHRQ to your prayers.. We really need divine intervention..
Oh and just a word about JJ.. his surgery went great and he had his pins out about 10 days ago.. he is doing wonderful now.. the surgeon was quite please with the results.
Thanks for all the emails for my brother's recovery.. I appreciate them more than you know.. as those were the longest 10.5 hours of my life..
Bless You All
Now for me.. I'm still living with the threat of the municipality giving me grief as I still have an extra dog here.. so I keep my patio door blind closed as that was how they caught me last time.. he went into my yard and on my deck in order to get pictures of the dogs in my house while I was out.. Talk about a sleaze. Thats why I couldn't beat the fine.. he had proof.So now like I said I keep my blinds closed at least until Dekyper is adopted. I have had calls for bassets but still I have no fosters to help me with them and it breaks my heart. It was SOOOOOOOO much easier when I could just go get them and bring them here.. no muss no fuss.. I have poor Lex still in a foster for months now and he needs to be moved as the family is back to school and he is alone for hours and not enjoying it at all... He is such a sweetie I don't understand why no one has asked about him...
Trouble for BHRQ
.. Hi friends .. Please excuse me I have been having alot of trouble with the municipality of Rigaud about the rescues I harbor here.. they fined me and had me in court fighting for the dogs.. but I lost the battle.. and got the fine $428.00 .. I'm still harboring a basset here but I'm taking the chance.. I also have one desperately waiting.. If only I had more help.
Then this past sunday my brother had a heart attack and is presently in hospital awaiting quadruple bypass.. This just has me so frazzled .. he had rheumatic fever as a child and that weakened his heart..
So not only am I trying to continue my rescue I cannot seem to find fosters and this may lead me to more fines from the municipality.. Jake still needs to go back to Saint Hyacinth for his leg.. I'm just super stressed so if you can friends please add us to your prayer list.. I need some support at this time..
Thank You..
JJ's Surgery Yesterday
.. Well JJ had his cat scan in the morning as well his surgery in the afternoon.. He is doing well so far.. the pins are in place to correct his joints .. The vet called this morning.. he is in good spirits but sleepy with the pain meds.. which is great to me.. the less movement the quicker the healing.. He will call me again tomorrow morning for a progress update.. the bandages are on presently.. but when he comes out the pins will be exposed to allow air and healing.. He needs allot of post op care now.. and hopefully in 8-10 weeks all will be healed and his life improved.. Phew.. Its truly been a worry.. but now I see some light for this little guy.
Kallie Still Needs A Home
.. This girl has been in foster for a while awaiting spaying.. well it was done last week and she is now ready for her " Forever Home ".. That distinct heart on her head speaks allot about her character.. she loves to be with her family and gets a little anxious when she cannot.. Most rescues are insecure at the beginning .. after all they had faith in their first owner that .. that was where they would stay.. but much to there dismay it wasn't the case and the shuffling began.. Its very hard on rescues they more often than not need to be sterilized.. stay here for observation.. then into foster care.. its allot of changes for them.. so anxiety is expected for a little while.. but love and a sense of security gives them what they need.. So if this little girl ( 14 months old ) can have a place in your heart and home.. contact me.. leave a comment.. or come to the site.
Moose Has His Forever Home With Mary
.. Well Moose had won the heart of his new guardian Mary.. Here is a bit of her email sharing her love of this boy.. a match made by the Universe.. who can go wrong with that.. WooHoooooo
Dear Helen
I see him "blooming" on an almost daily basis. He is no longer the reserved puppy I brought here, but the mischievous puppy he probably hasn't had the chance to be. He gets into lots of mischief, which although it is exhausting for me, I am grateful to see. I know that means he is beginning to acclimate to his surroundings. I also know he is so bonded to me; he'll let me do anything to him. He trusts me completely. I just need him to realize that I'm the alpha...that's what training will do for us! And I slowly see that he is realizing that...the more he trusts, the more he wants to please.
So, Helen, as you've probably already guessed...I am ready to commit to adopting Moosie and make him a naturalized citizen of the United States (although I know he will always have a place in his heart for his homeland, Canada). He's a wonderful, sweet boy who just needs lots of attention, love and training. I'm more than willing to provide all for him...he's my boy. Besides, both my neighbor and my friend Pete (Emily the basset's father) have told me they'll never speak to me again if I don't adopt him! Of course, they both know me well enough to know I could never give him up!
Please let me know what we need to do to formalize.... I promise I will continue to update you on his progress. He really is blossoming! And I know that will make your heart sing....
Love from Moosie and me,
Mary
JJ Besoin D'aide
Voici J.J. qui a 7 mois et qui est le résultât d'un autre
ÉLEVEUR DE FONDS DE COUR. Malheureusement
sa patte avant-droite est tellement déformée qu'une chi-
rurgie majeure est nécessaire. Sa patte avant-gauche est une version du Syndrome d'un coude mal enligné et une
chirurgie majeure aussi est requise. Il sera castré vendredi
le 17 avril et à partir de là ce seront les Rayons-X à l'hôpital
Vétérinaire de Ste-Hyacinthe le 25 mai et la décision sera
prise pour la continuité. Cette chirurgie sera très couteuse
et 1 année ou mieux d'une convalescence dans une cage avec le moins possible de mouvement. Une grave décision
à prendre. *Mise à jour* 25 mai: J.J. est allé à l'hôpital
Vétérinaire de Ste-Hyacinthe aujourd'hui et il a passé ses
Rayons-X. Le chirurgien a décidé de faire la chirurgie moins
radicale sur les pattes de ce jeune Basset. Il va racourcir
ses os et mettre des *PINS* ce qui va permettre à ses
ligaments d'être moins étirés et stressés et ainsi remettre
les joints plus à leurs places puis le 2e os coupé sera dans
la partie la plus basse de sa patte près de son pieds puisque celui-ci est en piteux étâts. Il va couper, sculpter
et polir pour une re-surface puuis joindre le tout avec les
*PINS*. Avant la chirurgie il y aura un scan pour déterminer
les meilleurs angles. Ce petit chien aura besoin de 8 semaines de grand repos dans une cage si tout va bien.
Nous avons besoin d'une somme de $3000.00 pour cette
opération. *Mise à jour* J.J. retourne à Ste-Hyacinthe pour
sa chirurgie le 8 Juin.
TOUT DON SERA GRANDEMENT APPRÉCIÉ
.. Alanis is from a rescue in Alberta origionally but was moved here with her guardian.. Unfortunately he is no longer able to keep her as he is moving to Nova Scotia in an apartment and that just would not be in her best interest so he is doing whats good for her even though its breaking his heart.. She is about 2.5 years old a real sweetheart and will be a great addition to any family.. So if you have an interest in bloodhounds and this girl appeals to your heartstrings.. Basset Bustle Party This Weekend
.. I hope some of you basset owners/lovers will be attending the Basset Party in Hamilton Ontario.. see details go to this link
http://www.bassetrescue.ca/bustle2009.html
Please plan to be part of the largest gathering of Basset Hounds in Canada at the 2009 BHRO Basset Bustle Extravaganza.
We are expecting hundreds of basset hounds and their people from across Ontario,Quebec and the U.S. to descend upon the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA off-leash dog park on May 30th to help us all celebrate our dedication and love of bassets, and show our support of Basset Hound Rescue .There will be lots of media to record the largest gathering of bassets in Canada, and you definitely won't want to miss the opening Basset Bustle kick-off extravaganza.
Party with the bassets all weekend
We have set aside a block of rooms at the pet and people friendly Hamilton Residence and Conference Centre, just a few short minutes from the park. The very modest room rates, which include breakfast, also feature oversize rooms and lots of green space.
We will be hosting a big pre-bustle pizza party at the hotel, on the Friday night, for all guests and their dogs. Please join us from 6:30pm - 9:30pm. We will have a quirky little contest or two, with great prizes -- and let's not forget some very yummy pizza from a fabulous local pizzeria.
I think this event would be allot of fun for both basset and guardian..
JJ's Appointment
Today I was up in Saint Hyacinthe Vet College.. I saw their orthopedic guy this morning.. they anesthetized JJ did a set of XRAYS.. so 45 minutes later he called me in.. showed me the legs.. and a plan of action.. cat scan then he will do a cut scrape reshape and pin both bones in the right leg.. remove some bone on both to try to get the over stretched ligaments to pull the ball of the joint into a better area as its way off center .. they truly are in bad shape .. this will hopefully allow the joints to be more solid .. there is already signs of degeneration/arthritis due to the malformations .. he gave me a way to fix this right leg at a reasonable cost of $3000. thats a hole lot better than the $10-12,000.. the other surgeon wanted.. mind you he spoke of joint replacements.. plates ectra.. and a year and a half recovery.. this way with the pinning.. it should be 8-10 weeks.. crated.. then full XRAYS again .. I spoke with his foster to see if she was willing to do this for him as its a BIG job.. cleaning the pins daily.. carrying him in & out to the toilet.... check for oozing of any sort.. he'll have a cone on.. pain meds.. ectra.. Much to my delight.. she agreed.. and asked if she could adopt this boy.. as he has won her heart.. she will schedule vacation time for after his surgery.. she's going to take a course in Tellington Touch therapy.. so I'm pretty confident with her..
Now I just have to raise the funds.. for this leg..
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) -- Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.
Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO® dry cat food.
Then you get this going on in pet food ingredients..
Connections to food and pet companies may warrant further investigation
U.S. Marshals seized millions of dollars worth of ingredients on May 7 2009 from American Mercantile Corporation, based in Memphis Tennessee. During an inspection of the company in March, FDA investigators discovered evidence of extensive rodent and insect infestation throughout the company's warehouse, which the company failed to correct.
American Mercantile stores and processes food ingredients, which are sold or used in the dietary supplements, food, tea and pet food manufacturing industries. The seized articles include food products such as sarsaparilla, spearmint leaves, cornstarch, sweet orange peels powder, licorice powder, sassafras, and salt.
