Sometimes I can't win
.. A basset needed to be picked up yesterday and was by my brother in my dodge van.. Well yesterday wasn't a great day to be out but I had little else I could do it was about 11:30 when he left.. This should have taken 3 hours round trip. .. and so still unable to drive or walk for that matter I handed him the keys and the Mapquest directions and off he went..
.. Well at around 6:30 I get a call from him asking me to call 911 he was in the ditch and hurt.. I called for him and called him back.. Oh Helen the van every window blew out.. I asked how is the dog.. he said shook up but also limping.. finally the OPP and ambulance and tow truck arrived.. the OPP took the dog to the vet in Hawksbury Jim was taken to the Hawksbury hospital.. Well Jim is badly bruised with fractured ribs.. I went to see the van today.. it's a write-off.. I only had one way insurance so I am basically SOL..
.. Yup always exciting at BHRQ

Bailey R.I.P.
A last entry for Bailey's foster diary.
Monday my foster Mom just installed dogwatch fencing at her new home in Gananoque. Inspite of my challenges she had arranged to keep me while spending half time in Ottawa and half in Kingston/Gananoque. Unfortunately I won't be using that yard. I passed peacefully in Sherry's arms earlier today. After returning Friday's breakfast I stopped eating and x-rays showed a large quantity of liquid in my abdominal cavity that was largely blood with a very low white cell count.
Perhaps when Sherry has had a chance to morn my passing some other needy dog will get to use my yard.

Gabby R.I.P.
.. Monday Gabby suffered several seizures.. she went to the vet and they kept her there taking various tests.. on an IV drip.. she showed little improvement wednesday.. today she was much worse.. she had a very hard life before coming here living outdoors under a truck for 6 years no matter the weather.. bred ...I was mad as a hatter when I was told of Gabby and her mate Samson.. but the last few weeks she knew what it felt like to be loved and cared for by two great fosters now Samson has lost his mate.. Gabby will be sadly missed..
Been A Tough Few Weeks For Me
.. I have been dealing with rheumatoid arthritis for many many years and have it for the most part under control... although you never really have it under control as it can flair up at any time.. I woke up recently unable to feel my lower legs.. I have been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.. Its going to take time I'm told to get this under control so please bear with me if I'm not writing daily..but know BHRQ really really needs fosters .. while I'm recovering

Gabby & Samson Arrive
... My goodness these two are in awful shape.. not only emaciated and dehydrated but teeth full of tartar.. Samson a badly infected paw... infested with fleas.. Yes not good at all.. but now they are here and have been cleaned up .. been to the vet.. Samson has meds to take care of his paw.. Their teeth will have to wait as I don't want to have them go into surgery so soon after their sterilizing.. Here they are the night I got them..
Hopefully in about a month there will be a great change.. thanks to their foster parents..

HOWL-O-WEEN PARTY
Hi Basseteers..
We thought of doing a HOWL-O-WEEN Party for the dogs on October 24th.. 1:00-5:00 at the Beaurepaire United Church in Beaconsfield... We have had a volunteer step up to do doggy loot bags.. another dessert.. another suggested to do a potluck for us.. Where everyone can bring something goolishly delightful.. wink... It can be with costumes.. both dog and slave..
# Bow-Wow Buffet: Waddle your Basset over to the Bow-Wow Buffet where you'll find a dazzling array of doggie treats that will tempt even the most finicky Basset!
# Howliday Hat or Costume Contest: Break out your hound's Howliday finest and let them strut their stuff!! Lotsa good stuff at the Dollar stores or Value Villages..
Pot-Luck Buffet For Us: Bring your favorite dish for the Pot-Luck Buffet. (Please let us know what you would like to bring so we don't have too many duplicates.) The wider the variety and amazing dishes would be well received.. You won't go home hungry (and neither will the Bassets)!
Howliday Raffle: A variety of hound and howliday items to take a chance on - that is always great fun.
Silent Auction...
Let me know ASAP.. So I'll have numbers.. bhrq@bassethoundrescuequebec.com

Balou's Visit To Saint Hyacinthe's Dr. Bolliger
... As I suspected Balou's left leg is a mess.. thanks to those back yard breeders that have NO clue what they are doing.. they just want to make a buck..
The report on him read like this..
1. Balou was presented at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at St-Hyacinthe to evaluate a deformation of the left front paw.
- Angular limb deformity. Radius curvus of both front legs more severe on the left side with deviation of the paw 90 to 120 degrees laterally
2. X-RAYS: (preliminary report)
- Lateral and cranio-caudal views were taken from the right and left forelimbs..
- In the leftt elbow joint slight arthritic changes are present with a marked incongruence between radius and ulna (7 mm).Severe angular deformity (valgus) of left forelimb.
DIAGNOSIS
Bilateral radius curvus more severe on the left limb due to the premature closure of the distal growth physis. Slight ostheoarthrosis in the left elbow joint.
Grade 2 bilateral lateral patellar luxation
SURGICAL TREATEMENT
Surgery: We had different possibilities to correct this kind of deformities. The objective of the surgery was to correct angular, rotational, and length abnormalities as well as re-establishing elbow congruity.
Dr Christian Bolliger DACVS-ECVS
Kim Dumas Senior Student
Now how sad is this.. he's about a year old and will have to undergo all this surgery which will include shortening the bones in his leg as well the joint.. he will be plated and screwed .. then weeks of adjustments visavie tightening the screws trying to straighten it.. re-bandaging antibiotics +++ to the tune of $3000.00 when all is done.. I will do another Chip-In for Balou in the hopes of raising some funds ..

Keeping Basset Ears Clean
... Often I am asked if there is a way to keep bassets ears out of their food or clean when they walk outside in the rain dragging those long ears.. Well there is and here is a solution.. Its called a " snood " click the red link..
Snoods For Basset Ears
.. He/she might not be the happiest camper to wear one of these but they do the trick for us owners..

Eventful Weekend
.. Well today I got confirmation of Balou's appointment with Dr. Bollinger in Saint Hyacinthe for his leg corrective surgery.. It will be on Monday I'll drive up there then I will know the course of action.. Luckily a wonderful family has stepped up to help with his post-op care and that is a blessing..
.. Reese has been adopted by a lovely family... she was at the Beaconsfield Pet Fair and they saw her like a few other families and were in love.. So now Reese will have a Forever Home..
.. Tomorrow Sunday (19th) I am taking Lilly the bloodhound I have up to Ottawa to meet a prospective foster.. I truly hope it works out so Lilly can have a family to spend time with..
.. A groomer friend has agreed to do a basset rub a dub.. Dog Wash and nail clipping.. in the beginning of October to help raise some funds for Balou.. I'll post the details when I have them..
.. We are also trying to plan a " Howl-O-Ween Bash " .. that could be a real hoot..
.. Yes allot of things came down the pike.. Stay Tuned Basseteers..

DAM Back Yard Breeders.. Meet Balou
.. Here's Balou.. less than a year old he is the victim of abandonment and back yard breeding.. His front left leg is so badly misaligned at the joint.. he'll be a crippled guy in pain later on.. Look at this.. He'll be going to Saint Hyacinthe to be seen by the chief orthopedic surgeon there as not many want to deal with basset legs.. So BHRQ will likely be looking at another $3000.00 surgery..
Someone Out there For Jill.
... Last night I received a little 5 year old girl named Jill.. She was in a puppy mill used to make money not only by breeding but by also having to be a surrogate .. so she virtually had NO BREAKS for 5 years.. just her cage and pups.. Then discarded like trash.. Never any vetting.. no house training.. just a cage with a grate bottom..
Will she regain the weight.. yes we will do our best with that.. In the past breeder bassets we have received who have the dragging tits .. after a few months have receded and of course the weight helps.. but folks don't often think of that.. they just look beyond this kind of thing sadly.. So like the title says.. I HOPE there is someone out there who can see beyond the exterior.. Is it You ?
Time will tell how Jill's life will play out.. Universe I'm calling on you..

Lots of News...
... Well Nemo has a home YAY.. Noah's doing better.. Reese arrived and is now with her foster Mom.. so she can settle down with a sense of homelife and security.. its very hard on rescues all the changes they endure in short spans of time.. I am so glad bassets are very resilient .. In the meanwhile I have yet another unwanted senior coming in with two younger gals.. Ethel looked so sweet and lost in the picture I received how could I say no.. she wouldn't have had a chance.. I'm sure there is someone here that will see her and say.. Yes that old doll is for me.. she's not so old just 6.5 but greying.. haha.. not the end of the world.. Luckily the Universe has wonderful people that call themselves Pilots For Paws.. they help rescues get out of bad situations by bringing them to the safety of waiting rescues.. Ethel.. Jill and Daisy are the three I will get with their help.. as well fosters Megan and Stephanie who will retrieve them from the pilot.. take them home for a couple of days rest then they will be in the relay transport to get them here to me.. Here's Ethel..
What rescues go through to try to save lives is amazing.. it takes such logistics to get it all to go off without too many glitches.. There are so many unknown volunteers that deserve such recognition for all they do driving.. piloting .. holding.. these rescues every weekend they hop in their cars to drive a stretch in the relays to get these dogs to their destinations.. I am in awe each time I have the pleasure of meeting up with them.. They truly are a blessing.. these road warriors ..

Sammie Goes Home Today
... Sammie is one cute little basset/beagle mix.. I had him at the Polo Match for rescues and along came this wonderful little girl of 9 that fell in love... She saw him from far and came to meet him.. she got her Mom to come meet him too.. they both saw Sammie for what he was a sweet little guy.. a little battle scared but that didn't change him.. Well by the end of the day.. they decided he was to be the newest addition to their family.. How lucky I thought.. this guy deserves nothing less than the security of a home and love of a family... Thank You.. M & J... for coming to the Polo Match for Rescues..
Berger Blanc ..
... For those of you who know this killing shelter in Montreal.. here is a Facebook page about the goings on there.. SHAMEFUL ..
The Truth About Berger Blanc
After hearing/reading some very questionable stories about the practices of this business, we think its time we brought attention to the situation.
Our animals welfare should not be in the hands of people just looking to make money off of them, dead or alive.
We think we should make sure the contract is in the right hands. Hopefully this page will generate enough support and information to create change and stop our stray animals from ending up in laboratories and our pets from suspiciously disappearing.
- Berger Blanc, a for-profit company with about $2 million in contracts in: Anjou, Mercier/Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Rivière des Prairies/Pointe Aux Trembles, Rosemont/La Petite Patrie, Plateau Mont Royal, St. Léonard, Montreal East, LaSalle, Centre Sud, Ville Marie.

Noah Is Home.. YAY
.. I picked up Noah at suppertime.. he was very glad to see me and let me know it with his vocalizing.. he looked real tired and of course the eye with the surgery was messy with dry blood.. but that will come off.. While I waited for the final tally of the bill as with the extra hour of surgery and two days post-op there it ended up being $1400.17 .. He has no teeth left .. they had them in a huge pill bottle for me to see.. They will have them on exhibit at their Open House in two weeks.. to show what happens when teeth are not looked after.. then they will give them to me.. I was shocked to see them all.. In any case I brought Noah home here.. fed him soft canned food with an antibiotic mixed in .. he was very hungry and ate it up no problem.. Now he is sleeping.. and I feel glad to be back.. my gang welcomed him with licks..

Noah's Surgery Today
.. Well poor Noah had his dental surgery and eye surgery today... The vet just called me.. the news wasn't good.. His teeth were so infected while she was pulling his canines puss was escaping from his nose in a stream.. then in the back teeth one side was so bad it had attached itself to the jaw bone... Surgery took an extra hour they were so bad.. She had not seen this severely rotted teeth.. it truly saddened her.. she informed me his white cell count was very high suggesting a dangerous level of infection in his system.
She explained how the buildup of tartar was a breeding ground for bacteria.. At first the gums become infected.. very much like human periodontal disease. The moist warm environment of his mouth was perfect for bacterial growth and grow it did eventually she said becoming so numerous as to freely wash down his throat to his stomach.. intestines.. and into his bloodstream. The bacteria she explained really loves the heart settling in there infecting the pericardium or the protective sac in which the heart rests.. now has resulted in a heart murmur.. I could just spit.. Imagine teeth like this..
He won't be coming home today as they want to keep him sedated with morphine as I imagine the pain to be horrific.. He will need she said weeks to months of antibiotics.. and soft food for the duration .. my heart is breaking.. How could someone have neglected him so badly then left him by the side of the road.. Now seriously who would want to foster or adopt this poor guy.. Its going to be a long hall for recovery both physically and emotionally.. Oh well I'll do my best with him ..
Please put him in your prayers.. that may sound silly to pray for a dog.. but I had to ask..

Sunday Morning
... I finally have a minute to myself to write.. this week I've been driving.. driving.. driving.. Oka.. Bromont.. Gramby.. Chamblay.. Saint Hubert.. Gatineau.. at least two bassets adopted .. three come in.. with the prospect of four so far coming this week coming.. However I must say the old guy that came friday is soooooo easy to have compared to the young ones.. the ten month old is full of beans.. never been on a leash.. but cute so she needs a little training..
Ellie the bloodhound's plans to be adopted fell through again.. so she continues waiting for a family sadly.. but needs a foster so I can get her out of boarding.. she is bored silly there..
Today I'm taking the old guy to the vet.. he has been neglected his nails alone curl into his paws.. he has a growth on his eye.. his teeth could use a cleaning.. I'll see what the vet says today..
I don't know what the afternoon will bring.. but I'm hopeful I can get a few personal things done.. besides its raining good day to run around.. So I'm off..

Disappointing Friends..
.. Of late I have truly disappointed a friend of mine.. She is on vacation and has been wanting me to come down to her place for a couple of days.. Well I thought I had it worked out.. but as anyone in rescue knows any type of break even two days is next to impossible especially since I am basically a one woman show and we cannot split ourselves in two sadly.. i haven't had a vacation in I don't know how long.. maybe 86 to the Expo in Vancouver.. I know this type of work puts a strain on any rescue.. most of them that I know are run by women.. many women alone.. as the men just don't get it.. the same way we are supposed to get their passions that they enjoy.. yes there not 24/7 like rescue but..
Anyways she still has a week.. and I hope to at least get to spend a day with her and have some fun.. Lou.. if you see this know how sorry I am..

Seniors
... Today I was thinking about the seniors I have and the ones that sit in wait.. What are we to do with senior bassets.. I know their fosters will tire of holding them.. and with my municipal problems as well my place is tooooo small.. I know it would take a lottery win for me to set up something like that.. and or a very generous benefactor or philanthropist who could use a good tax right off..
Older unwanted dogs need their own retirement home? Think about it...
Where would you go if you were an old basset hound and your person was too old or sick to take care of you any longer? Where would you go if your person didn’t want you anymore because you had too many accidents in the house, or you were too sick or too much trouble to take care of? Where would you go if your person died?
If you are a lucky old hound, someone would contact basset hound rescue and a foster home would be waiting to take you in and care for you until someone came along who wanted to adopt you. But what if there were so many other homeless basset hounds that there was no foster home for you? What if nobody wanted to adopt you because… you’re too old? Where would you go?
Sadly, this is usually the case. Foster homes are often hard to come by. People looking for an old hound to adopt are even harder to find. Who wants an old dog that might only have a few months or a year or two more to live? Who wants an old dog that might pee all over your carpet because he’s too old to get out the door in time? Who wants an old dog that might run up a lot of vet bills?
Yet, senior basset hounds are among the dearest, sweetest creatures on earth and they deserve to be loved and cared for as long as they live. You don’t dump Grandma off at the local shelter when she’s outlived her usefulness. You don’t take Grandpa to the doctor and say, “Put this old boy down, I can’t take care of him anymore.” You at least put them in a nice retirement home. Why would you do anything less for a loving, faithful companion just because he’s a dog?
In the US there is such a place..
House of Puddles accepts senior basset hounds from basset hound rescue organizations when there is no place else for them to go. They live with the lady who runs it, in her house, just like any other house pet. The only difference there are a lot of them. Her capacity is about 16 to 18 hounds at a time, and she is always full. As soon as one lives out his life, there is another one waiting to take his place.
I would love to have a home where I could do it all.. rescue and allow bassets to live out their lives if I cannot rehome them.. but I know it takes allot of money and help for such a thing.. My hat is off to House Of Puddles.. God bless you..

... Well today the doorbell rang.. there she was the canada post gal.. she asked me to sign and write my name in the little boxes.. Then promptly handed me two envelopes .. the fines I wrote about months ago finally made their way here.. For those of you who didn't read about these Rigaud municipal workers.. here is their last harassment
BHRQ Is Being Forced to Move or Cease Functioning
They already chased Kiko Rescue out of Rigaud in July after fines and harassment.. to another province.. imagine.. I sit here wondering am I going to jail as I cannot afford this craziness..
Dear Universe.. Hear my plea for aid in this issue .. I need your help..

A Prayer For Dogs..
.. Prayer For Dogs
"Dear lord, as we start each day
There's just one gift for which I pray
Please watch over all dogs everywhere
And bless them with someone to care.
Watch over the pups with plenty to eat
And the hungry strays out on the street
Those getting treats each time they yap
And those who struggle for every scrap
Those that sleep on a nice soft bed
Those with hard ground under their head
Those who play with girls and boys
And those who never have any toys
Those kept clipped and brushed and clean
And scruffy ones that don't smell too keen
Those who get to ride in cars
And those that sit behind cage bars
Those that flunk obedience school
Dig up the yard, snore and drool
Chew up your stuff, chase the cat
And they're still loved in spike of that
And those that are as good as gold
But left out to shiver in the cold
Chained up and forgotten there
They long for a warm home to share
Please god, as we end each night
Help more people do what's right
For each dog they meet, to do their best
And send your comfort to all the rest."

Frustrating Days..
.. Of late even though I should be thrilled I made some good adoptions.. the need just blows me away.. its not unusual for me to open my computer to Inbox (258).. 95% of them are kill lists.. its just heartbreaking.. many days I wish I knew people looking for dogs if not bassets other breeds.. I see so many pure breeds and mixed breeds being hopelessly put down.. just because of negligent owners.. or silly superstitions that black dogs are evil.. so they are usually the first in the gas chambers.. labrador after labrador .. " Black Dog Syndrome " its one of the silliest things I've ever heard.. and neither old dogs nor pups are immune from the gas.. as sweet as pugs are to collies.. spaniels.. maltese.. rottweilers.. you name the breed they are all victims.. Yet people go to the Pet Shop or the Breeders.. rather than SAVE A LIFE with a rescue.. There are so many sitting in rescues pacing the floors waiting.. I have to stop now I have a pick-up to do..

Alvin Needs a Home
Hug A Rescuer..
I know this is a strange title but this email was shared with me today and I cannot stress too much how difficult an emotional job this is.. Read On..
Yesterday I got the most devastating news. Someone that I had not known a long time but had so much respect for, took his life. He was an incredible animal rescuer, very passionate about helping any and all animals in need.
I had just met him recently and from the first few minutes, it was like we were best friends - he was just like that with everyone he met. He ALWAYS had a huge smile on his face, even with very hot temperatures when he was in a back room with very little air circulation and hammering away at something, if you were to walk into the room his face would light up when he saw you. We worked side by side for four days to help the animals in need, a few times 18 hours a day, then we parted ways. I did see him again a few weeks ago but just for 10 minutes but in those 10 minutes he greeted me with that huge smile, a hug and heartfelt thank you for driving supplies to help these critters.
He gave his heart and soul to caring for animals and never had a bad thing to say (other than about animal abusers). He recently became a Cruelty Inspector and had his future ahead of him, dedicated to the welfare of animals.
And yet, yesterday he took his life.
We will never know the reason this incredibly gentle soul felt his only option left was to end it all. Out of all the rescue people I know - of ALL the people I know period - I would never have thought for this person that ending his life was even a possibility. He was always so incredibly happy and ALWAYS had that huge smile. We'll never know what was going on inside though.
I've been doing rescue close to 10 years now and have heard/seen some pretty bad things. When I was deployed with UAN to the PM bust in October 2008 and went to the property, I saw things there that I will take to my grave with me. Pulling some dogs from very backward places and finding out they are full - and I mean FULL - of pellots from being shot. Shelters that regularly euthanize dogs by heartstick. Pulling a dog from a shelter only to be told 2 days later they "made a mistake" and gassed the dog.
Rescue is the most heartbreaking volunteer work I could ever imagine doing, and yet we keep plugging away - for the animals. But what we also do is keep the heartache to ourselves for the most part, and don't let others know when it's really hurting us. We put ourselves in so much debt, just to save one more dog. We go without sleep, trying to arrange transports. We take so much onto our own shoulders but we rarely ask for help.
Folks today, PLEASE reach out to someone. Go for a coffee with someone, offer a helping hand, ask for a helping hand ........ whatever it is that you need. We all need to support each other. If you're hurting, please talk to someone. We all understand because we live and breath it as well.
I've made some great friends in rescue and I've also made some enemies, but I would be there to help ANY rescue person if they ever asked for help. But as rescuers we just don't do that - we keep it to ourselves. We rarely admit we're human. We don't let our guard down.
This world definitely lost a bit of it's brightness yesterday when this young life was ended and we'll never know why, but hopefully someone will read this today and as a result, something will change. As a rescue community, we need to be there for others but we also have to admit that sometimes we need the help of others. There's very few of us in rescue that are not the "take charge, I'll do it myself" type of people, and generally we don't ask for help. But we're all human and my goodness, the animals need all of us and 10 times as many more volunteers, so we can't afford to lose even one person.
Rest In Peace my friend. I hope you've found the peace you were looking for.
Brenda

What A Week
.. Well first off I have to say that the International Show I did for Canada Day was interesting despite the strange weather folks came out.. Which gave me a little more exposure this time in Montreal West.. So many people say to me.. " bassets need a rescue " and then are amazed when I tell them that in 2.5 years I rescued and placed over a hundred..
Also this week I was sent a picture of this little doxie mix as he isn't the most attractive guy they felt he would be one of the first ones euthanized .. geeezzzz he is only 10 months and 10 pounds.. I told them " you know I'm basset rescue " " yes but you have a big heart " Okay I said send him here.. I mean really how could I let them gas him..
I think not.. I can't save them all.. but this little guy will get his chance at a life..

Double Edged Sword Weekend
.. This passed weekend has been a real roller coaster.. I really should have only been thrilled as I had an adoption ( Poko ) saturday and a new trial ( Rocky ) sunday.. I also had calls about 3 found bassets.. luckily 2 were returned to their owners.. One I still have to go get this week.. a 3 year old boy..
But saturday afternoon the hammer dropped on me.. one of my rescued pups had died.. he was only 1.5 years old.. and my favorite of the lot.. I loved them all but this guy was special.. quite a character.. He was so lovely looking he made it to the front cover of BHRO calendar.. My heart sank with that phone call.. I knew this couple LOVED him dearly but made a fatal mistake by leaving him in their car on a hot day while they shopped.. I have been angry.. melancholy.. couldn't sleep.. crazy images kept playing out in my head.. I had just ( June 4th ) put my Percy to sleep at 15.5 years old.. I am still raw emotionally.. In my mind I knew that they would never have hurt this little guy intentionally.. it was just poor judgment.. You know you hear it on the tv and radio .. about leaving dogs in cars.. this time it has hit close to home for me..
Rest In Peace Widestripe..Go find grumpy ole Percy..

URGENT TIMES ARE APPROACHING
.. As many of you know here in Quebec we have a set moving time every year its July 1st. That day and the days around it are nightmares for any rescue agency.. Calls come in about abandoned dogs as owners cannot take them and they rely on " anyone " to find the dog and take care of it.. Now Montreal and surrounding areas have a 3 million population and lots of moving goes on. Dogs get lost in the shuffle sometimes or worse.. tied up somewhere.. Calls come in from frantic people " come get this dog " its owner is gone.. We the rescuers scramble to get to these dogs.. try to foster them .. vet them if necessary.. do right by these poor souls.. But like all of us we need the publics help with fostering them as most kennels or vets are in their high season with no space to spare for a rescue besides bassets do best in a home environment.. not ending up in shelters with limited space so euthanasia can be the result.
So folks out there IF you can foster PLEASE contact us.. the dogs need your commitment at this time of year.
Thank You..

Across The Miles
.. Yesterday I was out picking up Magoo to take to be neutered.. on my way home I stopped at the mail box.. there was a Hallmark envelope with the other regular stuff.. a flood of feelings came over me.. I had a suspicion it was about Percy.. Yes I was right.. one of my adopters in the USA took the time to send me a lovely " Sorry For Your Loss " Pet Card.. Mary knows as well what it is to loose a basset as she lost her girl Daisy at the tender age of 13 two years ago.. I think basset owners have kindred hearts.. and I just wanted to let her know how very much I appreciated your kind words.. and I am thrilled Moose has filled the void in your life.. he is quite a character.. Keep smilin Mary.. Hugs to Moose..

Beep.. You Have One New Message
... Hi Helen.. I'm calling to tell you Percy's ashes are ready.. Reality again sets in.. I get them tomorrow.. I try to keep a lid on my feelings as they can get the best of me at times.. So I am keeping myself very busy.. Does it help.. sometimes.. but I look over at the couch and something is missing.. Hoover has been going on it but seems uneasy.. He was the one of all the dogs that have come and gone.. to engage Percy.. he wasn't intimidated by his grouchy humor.. as you may have seen in the various video's I put on Youtube.. Anyways I just put a short slideshow on Percy's Blog..

My Percy Passed Away Today
... This has been a tough day.. My Percy after 15 1/2 years has died.. my heart is so heavy tonight.. the house seems strange.. Hoover is very upset.. I came in not to long ago after delivering a dog and he wasn't there to bark and give me s*it for going out.. Its so crazy just the other day ( May 9th.. ) I took this video of him in the yard with the rest of them... Percy Out In The Yard.. he had been showing his years of late but this quick decline has me just empty.. Here is one of my favorite pictures of him..

Behind The Wheel
... I feel like that is all I am doing these days.. just yesterday I was down in Ogdensburg New York.. Picked up two 8 year old bassets .. then drove to Ottawa to deliver them to my foster.. Got home around 7:00 .. Today I'm off to Saint Hyacinthe for a possible adoption .. I am meeting this family at a dog park there as its neutral territory to see if Yankee and him get along.. but thats not until 6:00.. but with the travel time and 4:00 crazy traffic through Montreal.. I have to leave at 2:15.. so I don't get caught up in bridge traffic.. So again tonight I'll be home maybe by 8:00.. Tomorrow I'm delivering two bassets to the South Shore for foster.. Saturday I'm off to Kempville for a home visit.. Then saturday Bert and Faith arrive on the transport at 10:00 in Prescott Ontario.. Sunday I'm out again..
.. Yes allot of behind the scenes work goes on in rescue that a second thought isn't given too.. So when some folks complain about adoption fees its all I can do to hold my tongue sometimes.. I know this is my choice to do but if I didn't the 100+ bassets I have saved and rehomed might not have had a life..as well their adopters might never have had the best friend they could ever have.. I know I'm proof of that as all three of my personal bassets are rescues.. and I cannot imagine my like without these clown like dogs.. Its why it is breaking my heart to know I'm loosing Percy..

BHRQ Garage Sale Success..
... Well yesterday I participated in a two family garage.. BHRQ and Lisette's ( Mozart's ) Mom's son.. It was lovely weather.. a little to sunny for my liking I baked.. Sales were slow but steady leaving a good feeling for the day..
Then I got home.. apparently the police were there once again.. saying they had a complaint.. The dogs were all inside imagine .. I shook my head.. then talking with a neighbor who has been a good friend in the past.. informs me that there is a petition going around that he refused to sign to get us out of here.. Talk about steamed.. this lot of low life's around here have nothing better to do than stir up s*it..

Tough Week
.. Well besides trying to prepare for a fundraising garage sale that hopefully goes well saturday morning .. I've been called upon quite a bit for dogs this week including a bloodhound.. its so tough with the municipality harassment breathing down my neck.. I know they are building a large case against me because he looked so smug when he left.. satisfied he got pictures again..
In the meanwhile my Percy hasn't been doing well.. he will turn 16 november .. I fear I am loosing him .. this is weighing very heavy on me.. Years back I used to sing a song to him called " Somewhere " I would change the words around a bit like.. " I'll hold your leash when we get there " The dream for us was a hobby farm where he could run stay out as long as he wanted without grief from anyone if he barked as his bark is from his toes.. Perimeter walking is a favorite activity of his.. and I'd tell him how deep the snow gets in rural fields.. but I failed him .. I haven't been able to provide that for him.. maybe for Hoover and Micky I can..

BHRQ Is Being Forced to Move or Cease Functioning
.. As many of you know that the municipality as well as its workers have been harassing me / fining me / peeping in windows.. to snap pictures after crossing through private property.. go up on my back deck.. move my tempo to snap pictures of my kitchen through the patio door.. talk about feeling violated.. This past friday I was here working on my computer as usual catching up and planning my weekend.. The dogs were barking as usual in here with anything that passed.. so its NOT a new event.. Later on I was dressed and out the door.. and that alone is often a feat as they want to go too.. I quickly backed out.. turned headed for the van as I had plans.. This worker says.. Your not going anywhere.. excuse me I said... You didn't answer the door.. I looked at him answer who I can't hear a thing in there with the dogs barking .. we called the police to gain entry.. just wait.. Soon she arrived they were blabbing on about me.. the rescue.. illegal use of MY home..
I was livid.. this was so typical .. the mentality of these people SUCK...
They haven't a clue about the concept of rescue.. its like I speak a foreign language..they would just as soon put a bullet through their heads and be done with excess dogs.. In the country thats the way they do it.. Then they are threatening me with all kinds of crap if I don't let them in to see my rescues and take pictures.. he had already said he would stay and keep me there until he got a court order.. NOW imagine .. over a couple of dogs he is showing his MACHOness.. you know the men TRY to make their point known by there aggressive manner.. I had THINGS to do I couldn't let this guy tie up my day.. I knew his smug self would not go until I let them in.. Karma does have a way of equaling the field I thought.
The police in tow they entered snapping their photos.. more court evidence they said.. as well I was snapping pictures of them violating MY space.. like I'm some big criminal.. I could feel the steam coming out my ears.. They finally left with a parting comment.. You'll receive fines mail about this..( $4200.00 ) My parting comment was YOU REALLY HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO.. LOOK ON THIS STREET .. THERE ARE 4 ABOVE GROUND POOLS ready for summer action ladders plus... BUT NO PROTECTION.. NO FENCE.. NOT CHILD SAFE.. YES HERE IN RIGAUD YOU PEOPLE WORRY MORE ABOUT DOGS THAN CHILDREN WHO COULD EASILY DROWN DUE TO YOUR AND THEIR NEGLIGENCE.. SHAME ON YOU.. The cop looked back yes its going to take a drowning before they wake up.. and closed the door.. Put this out of my head or I knew I'd end up feeling like shit all day.. and I wasn't going to give them that power over me.
Stay Tuned.

Help Us Close Gas Chambers
URGENT!
May 18, 2010
Hi Everyone,
We need to compile a list of the gas chambers used in Quebec and throughout Canada. If anyone could help us with this, it would be most appreciated !!
Please write to your pound, that governs your area and ask if they use the gas chamber as a method of euthanization. Even if they state that they use a gas box occasionally, we would like to know. If you don't know the name of the pound, then please call or write to your municipality or look up your municipality on the internet under "Animal Regulations" to find out who they are.
We are now connected to someone in BC who would like to map out all the gas chambers used across Canada. I think that this is a great opportunity for Canadians to unite!! I am politely asking everyone to cooperate. Apparently there some municipalities in Quebec, who have stopped using the gas box. If you know who they are, please advise me.
We must all join together to fight against all forms of animal abuse. There is no other way!! So, please let us unite for the animals!
Please send this message out to all your Canadian contacts.
Thank You.

Merci.

Even On Weekends
... As some of you know I have been struggling with these municipal workers who fined me $1400.00 for having 3 extra dogs here while they were being vetted.. prior to going to fosters or adopted.. Well once again they struck when I was out this weekend.. $1200.00 this time.. I am so discouraged I'm going to end up in jail for these fines.. Oh how I wish I knew someone with legal ease and the same passion for rescue as I do.. They are just so backwards here.. they hassle me but overlook things in this municipality that could KILL a child.. You see here well on my street alone 4 homes have above ground swimming pools.. with ladders +++ .. does the municipality care that NONE of them are safely fenced.. NO.. its going to take drownings before anyone does anything.. that is just one thing that they turn a blind eye too.. but they continually violate my property.. jumping fences .. peeking through windows.. Yes they are going to force my hand .. they want me out of here.. I'm going to start looking.. or like I said I'll end up in jail..

Help Stop Hundreds From Dying Needlessly in Toronto
The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will kill all 350 animals at its Newmarket shelter this week.
OSPCA spokesman Rosaline Ryan told the Sun Monday night that the animals — including 60 dogs — “need to be humanely euthanized,” after ringworm tore through the Woodbine Ave. shelter. Two turtles are the only creatures that won’t be put down, she said.
“The OSPCA is deeply saddened we had to take this action,” Ryan said. “We were left with no other option.”
Ryan said ringworm, which can spread to humans, showed up in the shelter about five weeks ago.
The shelter subsequently was closed.
But despite quarantining the animals, the disease continued to spread, Ryan said, forcing the “depopulation” of the shelter.
“It has reached epidemic proportions,” she said. “It is not controllable.”
While ringworm is not uncommon and is treatable in animals, Ryan said the aggressive disease is “difficult to control” within a shelter.
“It’s tragic when it reaches these proportions,” Ryan said. “It’s shocking and sad.”
A few volunteers gathered outside the shelter Monday night as news of the looming euthanasia plan spread.
“We have offered help,” said Ruth Wozniak, a volunteer at the shelter for 10 years. “A number of animals who are not infected will be euthanized.”
Wozniak said York Regional Police were at the shelter while OSPCA officials spoke with the volunteers.
“Even if they do let us inside, what are we going to do?” she said. “They expect us to understand.
“Surely killing animals is not the answer.”
The OSPCA and the issue of animal euthanasia was front and centre last year when the society raided the Toronto Humane Society. OSPCA investigators along with Toronto Police raided the shelter on Nov. 26, claiming THS was keeping sick animals alive that should have been euthanized. Former THS president Tim Trow and four other senior employees were charged with animal cruelty.
OSPCA investigators accused the THS shelter of being a “house of horrors.”

R.I.P. Annie
... Today sad news befell BHRQ.. one of my 2009 rescues " Annie " in the above picture has gone over Rainbow Bridge.. due to a physical ( cerebral) condition caused by suspected brain lesions.. progressively increasing severity of her attacks.. So understandably she was euthanized.. This was a very difficult decision for the adoptive family .. They are to be commended for all the efforts of their vet and themselves for quite a lengthy battle for Annie.. no doubt a hole has been left behind with the family and their basset Bobby.. Here is a poem that often comes to mind at these times..
I’m Still Here
Friend, please don’t mourn for me
I’m still here, though you don’t see.
I’m right by your side each night and day
and within your heart I long to stay.
My body is gone but I’m always near.
I’m everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I’ll never depart
as long as you keep me alive in your heart.
I’ll never wander out of your sight-
I’m the brightest star on a summer’s night.
I’ll never be beyond your reach-
I’m the warm moist sand when you’re at the beach.
I’m the colorful leaves when fall comes around
and the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I’m the beautiful flowers of which you’re so fond,
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.
I’m the first bright blossom you’ll see in the spring,
The first warn raindrop that April will bring.
I’m the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
and you’ll see that the face in the moon shine is mine.
When you start thinking there’s no one to love you,
you can talk to through the Lord up above you.
I’ll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees,
and you’ll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.
I’m the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
and the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I’m the smile you see on a baby’s face.
Just look for me friend, I’m every place!

Wow May Already..
... Well sorry for the absence lately but that last crazy week took allot out of me and as I suffer from rheumatoid arthritice I went into a flair.. laying me up for a few days.. Then my Percy ( my 15 year old basset ) got sick I thought I would loose him but after a few antibiotics he has bounced back.. However for me it was quite a scare.. But enough of that.. Lets see whats been going on since my last entry.. Ruby is going tomorrow to her home with another basset of 3 years.. YAY.. I love it when I get experienced basset owners adding to their home.. That way I know that she will fit like a leather glove with Donna.. So I'll be off to Kingston Ontario tomorrow to deliver her..
.. Charlotte is going on a trial tomorrow with a lovely couple and their three children.. Charlotte is quite the love bug so I am pretty sure they will give her the forever home she needs..
That will free up space here for me.. However I do wish that Foxy,Sadie,Lena, Brewster and Yankee would get a chance.. They are all great dogs that have been waiting quite a while.. my concern is always the fosters become too attached and are heart broken when they go.. Fosters are the lifeblood of rescues giving them a chance at a new life instead of facing euthanasia..

Absolutely Crazy Week
... What a week.. last saturday night 11:15 the basset/doxie mix pups arrived with Molly the basset.. I drove home the hour and fifteen minutes but soon realized getting in the house was going to be a joke.. the gang here would howl blue murder as soon as they heard the van.. So I just drove by and as luck would have it.. they heard me.. as its dead quiet around here at night.. So off I drove to Tim Horton's for a coffee and decide plan B.. now by this time its after 1:00am.. So all the dogs were fast asleep on the myriad of blankets I brought to make them comfy .. Sooooooooooo I put my seat back.. put a blanket over me and shut my eyes.. I woke a few times.. but at last it was light around 5:30.. Yup back into Timmy's.. got a coffee and bagel .. headed to the house.. took everyone inside after putting my gang out for their morning constitutional haha.. and just sat.. segregated the pups and Molly.. let my gang back in... gave them all a treat.. and I curled up on the futon. At around nine I had to go meet a potential adopter at SPAWS.. for 10:00.. she was there and loved Bea.. took her home. I was beat but knew I had loads to do this day..
So then all this week I've been driving and driving.. the mixes went to Ontario.. Connecticut and one locally.. Molly the basset that came as well has her forever home in a senior residence in Sherbrooke Quebec.. so daily I was off to somewhere.. Then Harley was adopted and he went to an area of Quebec called Gore.. another long drive on friday.. Last night I got a call about a basset that was loose up in Terrebonne area.. So off I went today to get her.. OMGoodness what a stinker.. I don't know how long she was on the lamb .. so I took her to be groomed she is there now.. This is a cleaned up her.. Ruby
Tuesday I'm off to Saint Hilaire area to pick up a seven year old boy.. Yup a crazy week for sure and in that mix Charlotte was in to get spayed.. one of my cockatiels died .. 22 years old.. so now her mate is alone.. I'll bury her tomorrow before I head out again..
So there you have it.. I should be called the juggler.. LOL

Meet Molly.. She Arrives Sunday
Crazy Time Approaches
.. Yes its going to be a bit wacky this coming weekend.. I have the doxie mixes coming in at goodness knows what time with the transports.. Also I've been told there is another basset gal in trouble could I take her too on this run.. so thats a wait and see as I don't know if she is vetted or what.. The dogs all need Certificates of Health and Rabies ... The borders can get backed up.. transfer time can back up.. weather can be a factor.. However when all is said and done and I know my little charges are here and fine I'll rest easier..
Then its a case of delivering some to Ottawa.. some locally and one to Connecticut.. Yes my van does take a beating these days its a 93 and I can't tell you the number of miles I've put on it.. Alas I bought a lottery ticket.. who knows someone has to win..
I'll post pictures of this gang when I get them.. In the meantime keep us in your prayers..

Asking For Help.. Never Easy
... This is like a catch 22 for me.. several folks ask or say to me.. if there is anything I can do to help let me know.. I don't know anyone's talents besides my own.. Lets face it the toughest thing for ANY rescue is funding.. I am basically a one woman show with my fosters.. I have heard several great ideas to raise funds for vetting .. plus plus plus.. Fundraising can be anything people need or service.. If a hairdresser could do hair for a day for bassets.. or someone organize a bake sale.. garage sale.. bowling for bassets.. Casino night for bassets.. something - a - thon.. or is crafty can make bassety things.. or an artist can do paintings to auction off.. If you just think about it you'll think of some way.. I know folks are always being hit up for money.. but I have yet to ever walk by some Charity anywhere without making a donation.. I guess I am such a believer of " Pay It Forward " attitude.. for I oft feel blessed in life..

Yankee
... Well this guy is a rescue I brought up from IL. he was in a kill shelter and I just couldn't stand it.. I vetted this boy and he needs his Forever Home.. He is a little more that a year.. so still lots of energy.. so probably needs a home with another young dog to play with.. He is very sweet.. If you'd like anymore info or to foster this guy let me know..
Handsome boy
Him and 3 other rescues are coming to the Spring Walk tomorrow at Terra Cotta Dog Park in Pointe Claire.. 12:30

Surprise Newbie Is Pregnant..
... Yes this little one was turned in after being shuffled 3 times.. she's needy.. Well hell she's pregnant... they get like that.. In any case this will be a tough foster placement I'm afraid.. its hard enough to get fosters.. let alone for a pregnant basset.. its quite a commitment.. Hopefully the Universe will come through for this girl.. Look at this face..
